Peter Lawton Douthit, poet, author and farmer, passed peacefully into eternity on October 27, 2012, in Taos, NM, at the age of 76.
He was born in Bradford PA, lived in New York City, San Francisco and New Orleans, before settling in Taos 33 years ago.
He is preceded in death by his sons, John Lawton and Michael Amergin Douthit; parents, Louis Earl and Erla Louise Douthit, and brothers-in-law William A. MacNaughton Jr. and Barry Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Anne L. MacNaughton; daughter, Kathleen M. Douthit; son, Brendan D. Douthit; step-daughter, Daphne Julep Keidel, and grandson, Jesse R. Nicolay. Also survived by his sisters, Mary Margaret (Jeff) Dissinger of Cimarron, and Dee Brown of Richmond, CA; sisters-in-law Virginia Sue (Jan) MacNaughton and Beverly MacNaughton of Austin, TX; brothers-in-law James Robert MacNaughton and Charles Thomas MacNaughton of Houston, TX as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and many friends and relations at Taos Pueblo, in Oklahoma, and around the world. Known most often as “Rabbit,” Peter was a pioneer of alternative communities, a political activist, entheogenetic explorer, and poet guru for many.
