Lester Wayne Carroll

    Lester Wayne Carroll, 66, of Gardner, CO, passed away May 25, 2009 on Memorial Day.  Born in Brownsburg, VA.  He lived his life in various parts of the world due to his service to his country, but he lived principally in Colorado, Virginia, and Texas.  An honored Air Force Veteran, Les served our country in the Vietnam War.  Les was a chemical engineer focusing on Biohazard protection.  He finished his last seven years at Lowry AFB as Superintendent of their Bioenvironmental Engineering and Safety program, where he saved lives and contributed to public health and safety.  Les received an Honorable Discharge as a Senior Master Sergeant after 26 successful years in the Air Force.  Les then selected to continue to serve his nation with the Veterans Administration as the Director of Safety and Occupational Health at Fort Lyon Veterans’ Hospital in Las Animas, CO.  Les was recognized and awarded for initiating best practices in safety programs for the VA Hospital System; the policies and practices he implemented are continued today.  He is preceded in death by his wife Alma Jane Lester.  He is survived by his son Lee H. Carroll; daughter Kirsten K. Yeisley and her husband Shayne; his former wife Saundra Kaye Galloway; step son Mark Garcia and his wife Julie; step daughter Pam Saur; and 8 grandchildren – Edward, Nicole, Vincent, Alex, Erin, Morgan, Jacob and Alyssa.  Services will be held on Saturday, May 30th, 2009 at 11:00 am at Johnson-Romero Funeral home in Walsenburg.  Burial and reception to follow at the family property at 958 County Rd 620.
