Donald David Haney 5/31/1943 ~ 5/2/2015 Donald David Haney II, 71, passed away on May 2, 2015 in San Luis Obispo, California after living with dementia for nine years. David was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on May 31, 1943 to Don Haney and Freda Sporleder Haney. Raised in Walsenburg, he was immensely proud to be from the town that his mother’s family helped found and where his father served as mayor from 1955-1959. At Walsenburg High School he played football and was in the marching band before graduating in 1962. It was at this time that he learned to play the stand-up string bass and his lifelong passion for jazz music began. David left the foothills of Colorado for sunny San Diego where he enlisted in the Navy as a corpsman and went on to serve as a medic in Vietnam. After returning from war, he became a licensed respiratory therapist – a career to which he committed almost 40 years. He was briefly married to Barbara Conant and had a
son, David. For the next few years, “Big David” and “Little David” lived the bachelor life until 1980, when he married Susan Thompson. Together, they had children Harmony, Kellen and Mariah and raised them in Los Osos, California starting in 1987. The children grew up in a home full of jazz music, laughter, and love. Huerfano World was delivered to their home every week so David could keep up with Walsenburg, his hometown that he loved so much. His off color jokes, infamous quotes, and love for life will be missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to know him. David is preceded in death by his parents, his aunt Amelia Sporleder, and brother Fredrick “Fritz” Haney. He is survived by his sister Susan (Warren) Bowles; children David (Michelle) Haney, Harmony (Raul) Salgado, Kellen (Yvonne) Haney, Mariah (Patrick) Eaves; and grandchildren Jake, Gavin, Jackson, Spencer, Justice, and Adelaide.
