LA VETA- Maurice E. Heikes has submitted a letter of intent with the County Clerk and Recorder’s Office to run for the office of County Commissioner District 2 for the Democratic Primary election.
Heikes, with his wife Irene of 36 years, has lived in La Veta all their lives. Their children, Kevin, Danielle and Kyleigh, live in Kansas City, and their daughter Kristal lives in Corvallis, OR.
Heikes has served on numerous boards, including Re-2 School Board for 16 years, and Huerfano County 4-H Fair Board for several years. He is currently a member of the Masonic Lodge #59, and has served as trustee, Administrative Council Chairman and Finance Chairman for the United Methodist Church. He is also serving on the La Veta Fire Protection District, and is an activity driver for La Veta schools. Heikes performed in several productions at the “Spoon River Theatre” and previously worked for Huerfano County mowing weeds on the county roads for two summers.
Heikes feels his experience on these boards, working with the Department of Transportation for 31 years and his part-time work with the county, will be contributing factors in making him a qualified County Commissioner.
