Lady Redskins unstoppable

LA VETA, SARGENT– The La Veta Ladies continued their freight-train express as they rolled their way through a pair of games last weekend, defeating the Del Norte Tigers, 58-42, and the Sargent Farmers, 50-40.

The victories gave the Redskins a 14-1 overall record and clinched the conference with a 9-0 record.  La Veta is currently ranked number five in the state and should move to number 4 today when the Colorado Prep rankings come out this morning.  Walsh, previously ranked number three, lost to an unranked team this weekend.

The Lady Skins dominated Del Norte from the opening tip when their offense came out strong and continued their pressure defense to control the tempo of the game.  Their mastery of the game continued as they opened up a double-digit lead into the second quarter and held on to a comfortable 29-20 point halftime lead.

The second half also belonged to La Veta as Coach Smith rotated players off the bench to keep the momentum going.  Shelby Morgan exploded with 24 points.  She shot 9 of 15 from the field.  Christina Koutnik continued her aggressive defensive play with five steals and also hit 10 points.  La Veta went into a zone and man-to-man defense in the second half, putting the game out of the Tigers’ reach.

On Saturday, La Veta traveled to Sargent and narrowly escaped their first conference and district loss.  The Redskins started off slow, missing shots from the field and, unable to drive the lanes, missing several scoring opportunities.  A tough Farmer defense held the Skins to only 17 first-half points.

They came alive in the second half.  After Coach Smith’s halftime pep talk, they scored 33 points in the second half.  La Veta took the lead midway in the third and held on to win with a final score of 50-40.  Morgan continued to lead the way with 18.  Sami Willhoite scored 11.

La Veta will face the Hoehne Farmers in non-conference play tonight at home.  They will travel to Sanford Friday.
