Grant is Secured to Assist Disabled in Huerfano County

by Larry Patrick
HUERFANO- Kathy Brown of the Southern Colorado Developmental Disabilities and Inspiration Field Community Centered Board in Huerfano & Las Animas County has secured a $25,000 grant for assisting the disabled in both counties. “We are the only rural area in the state to receive this grant from the Developmental Disabilities Council of Colorado.” said Brown.
The leadership improvement grant now needs 12-15 people in the state to oversee the program. Brown hopes to find disabled adults along with their significant others or parents of disabled children in this area, to be part of the group. No experience is required of those seeking the position on the committee.
The grant is for one year. The curriculum of the program will assist disabled individuals in navigating the state systems to get the help they need for themselves and others. The program also consists of a 2-day trip to Denver to meet with legislators to seek additional support for the needs of the disabled. There is no cost to those on the board for this trip.
Brown says anyone interested in serving on this worthwhile committee or finding more information can contact her office at 719-738-3151 ext. 16 or e-mail her at www.kathybrown@scdds.com. The volunteers will put in approximately 8 hours per month. Those interested are asked to contact her by Aug. 31.
