Colorado law changes August 7

by Ruth Orr

COLORADO — Heads up drivers, there’s a new law in town. Starting August 7, 2023, the law requiring drivers to move over for emergency vehicles on the side of the road will expand. Governor Jared Polis signed HB23-1123 earlier this year, putting into place the new rules.

Drivers coming up on any disabled or stationary vehicle on the side of the road with hazards flashing must either move to the other lane or slow down to at least 20 mph below the posted speed limit when passing.

The measure will help protect police, first responders, and civilians. It comes on the heels of 2022, the deadliest year on Colorado roads on record.
