First National launches new product to counteract debit card fraud

by Chris Egland
LAS ANIMAS/HUERFANO — The First National Bank in Trinidad is pleased to introduce iCard, a free mobile card management application that helps reduce account fraud by allowing cardholders to monitor accounts with their smartphone and control how, when and where their debit card is used.

“With this new and powerful debit card management tool, our cardholders can set parameters for when, where and how their debit card is used,” Daryl Aubuchon, First National Bank President said. “It’s easy for card holders to  turn ‘off’ their debit card from their smartphone, and then turn it back ‘on’ when they want to use it, but the on/off feature is only one of the safeguards available with iCard.”

iCard was developed in partnership with Fiserv and is available in the Apple® App Store or Google® Play.  Once iCard is set up, real-time smartphone alerts can be customized based on the types of information each cardholder would like to receive.  For example, a cardholder can set up an alert to be notified when a card is used, when a transaction is approved and exceeds any of the permitted use policies, or when a card transaction has been attempted but has been declined based on the parameters established.  Cardholders have the ability to “turn off” their card when not in use, establish transaction spending limits and decline a transaction when the amount exceeds a predefined threshold.

This tool would be ideal for parents with college students.  iCard offers cardholders the capability of linking additional accounts to better monitor dependent spending.  By using the GPS system in their smart phone, geographic use restrictions can be established for users along with restrictions on merchant type and spending limits.  With one easy-to-use application, iCard links accounts with more than one debit card, giving parents the ability to turn off cards when not in use, establish spending limits to allow transactions up to a certain dollar value, and decline transactions when amounts exceed predefined thresholds.  Other controls can restrict usage by geography or specific merchant categories. Real time alerts create another layer of fraud protection with notice that a transaction was attempted, declined, or both.

“iCard is ideal for users who want to actively manage their cards. iCard’s inventive and thoughtful approach to card management makes the user experience as easy as possible,” Mr. Aubuchon added. “We are excited to offer this tool to our cardholders!  Not only is iCard user-friendly and convenient, but it will aid in our continued efforts to proactively work to reduce fraud and identity theft for our cardholders.”
This free tool is also ideal for business owners who want to monitor their employees’ company cards.  A business owner can set up an alert to be notified when a card is used, when a transaction is approved and exceeds any of the permitted use policies, or when a card transaction has been attempted but has been declined based on the parameters established.  All transactions can be monitored or controlled for specific merchant categories, such as travel, restaurants or entertainment, and can be denied or reported for types of merchants deemed not business related.

iCard is exclusively available for debit card holders with The First National Bank in Trinidad, which is an Equal Housing Lender and Member FDIC.
