Fire Department hires grant writer

by Carol Dunn

LA VETA- At its meeting on Feb. 21, the La Veta Fire Department Board voted to retain a specialist to help with grant development in 2008. The Fire Department Board is interested in upgrading EMS and firefighting equipment, communications and making capital improvements. Between Jan. 10 and Feb. 14, the Department had nine calls. Six of these calls were auto accidents, requiring EMTs to also respond. One call was mutual aid at the structure fire at 102 Indiana in Walsenburg on Jan. 31, which is being investigated as arson. Emergency Medical Services Director, Malea Schmidt, reported that David and Kim DeTray have been certified as EMT-basics by the State of Colorado. This adds two to the existing EMS roster. Two others have passed the national registry and are awaiting Colorado certification.
