Emergency Services train with Flight for Life

by Carol Dunn

LA VETA- La Veta Fire Department personnel and Emergency Medical Technicians trained Tuesday night on the new football field northeast of La Veta with Flight for Life.  The Flight for Life crew, based at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center in Pueblo, caused some curiosity as they flew into town just as the La Veta Town Board Meeting was called to order.  Eight people attended the training, which included procedures for patient triage and loading, finding landing zones, and assisting the helicopter pilot with the directional aspects of landing.

The Flight for Life crew includes a pilot, a registered nurse, and a paramedic.  On night missions, all crew members perform their tasks while wearing special helmets equipped with night vision goggles, which they demonstrated to the trainees.

The La Veta Fire Department sponsors two training sessions per month for its volunteers.  The Department is actively recruiting firefighters.
