Democratic get out the vote rally

by Nelson Holmes

LA VETA- The “Get Out the Vote” rally and fundraiser, held by the Huerfano County Democratic Party at the Parkside Gallery in La Veta, was, by all measures, a great success.  Over seventy party faithful attended the event which featured a silent auction of original works of art, entertainment provided by area musicians and ample food and drink.  Punctuating the festive tone were strategy discussions and lively debate.

Mark Craddock of the Obama Campaign and Huerfano County Democratic Party Chairman, David Gnaizda, discussed ways to insure all the county’s Democrats get to the polls.  Early voting is a core concern for the Obama campaign and Mr. Craddock emphasized the need for Democrats to volunteer at the “Campaign for Change” office in Walsenburg.  The lead up to November 4th has gained more import with the advent of early voting and mail-in ballots and the Obama campaign is making sure that there are enough “boots on the ground” to ensure a winning turnout.

Along with the party stalwarts were elected officials; State Representative Wes McKinley flipped burgers at the grill while entertaining the questions of his constituents and Commissioner Scott King listened intently to the thoughts and concerns of Huerfano county residents.  And, as a reminder to our citizenry, it is at this type of event where it is possible to meet with your representatives and ask the questions that matter to you.  Being residents of a small county we get a degree of access to our officials that residents of more populous areas would envy.

With weather as perfect as the venue, and the unifying sense of purpose seemingly shared by all, the evening ended as a happy precursor to glad successes yet to come.
