Countywide free holiday concert for kids a way cool rock-n-soul fest

by William T. Beverly, Ph.D.

LA VETA- Last Tuesday, over 70 kids and adults gathered for a free holiday concert at the Fox Theatre in Walsenburg.  How wonderful to see both La Veta and Walsenburg kids mingling in the same room.

The bands included “Blueberry Jam” (shades of the “La Veta Vibes”) with Devon Enke, Quinton Kiehne, Lucas Baumann and Kristine Jenkins and another group, the “Jazzy-Rock Power-Trio” with Phillip Marshall (lead guitar), Mason Lykins (bass), and David Aurelio (acoustic guitar and vocals).

About midway, local singer Alexandra Tenorio stole the show with her soulful rendition of Steve Miller’s “Fly Like an Eagle,” several nicely done Motown tunes, and some originals.  Tenorio’s voice and stage presence were a captivating combo for the truly inspired fans at this holiday event.  The group, led by the talented David Aurelio and co-sponsored by the Huerfano/Las Animas Family Resource Center has enjoyed several successes.  As part of the Huerfano County Record Company for Youth, they have previously performed for the National Governor’s Association and also released a CD titled Until Tomorrow with songs written by Phillip Marshall and Alexandra Tenorio including “Looking Out My Window” and “Living On The Sun.”

A little later in the evening, another much smaller Tenorio, Alexandra Tenorio′s 9-year-old brother David, took the stage and played several songs on an electric bass that was probably about the same height as he was.  Near the end of the evening, Bo Seawell (drummer/ singer for local sensational funk/jam band “Planet O”), who was clearly enjoying the show, came up for a couple of songs on drums including “Good Old Chicago” and a very funky “Play That Funky Music White Boy.”  In all, it was a wonderful evening and all in attendance were truly entertained.
