County gets windfall from wind farm project

by Larry Patrick
WALSENBURG — The Huerfano County Commissioners attended the open house held Tuesday by Black Hills Energy at the new wind farm site on Ron Busch’s ranch 20 miles east of Walsenburg. With approximately 40 people in attendance, Black Hills Energy presented the commissioners with a check for $178,000 (see picture on page 8) which will be used for various community development projects including improvements at Fiesta Park in Walsenburg.
At the Wednesday meeting, Jason Hartman of Black Hills Energy said there were no injuries in the 50,000 man hours of completing the project.
Three local contractors using a work force of 55 people helped complete the Busch Wind Farm. The outside crews also used rentals and hotels in Walsenburg while frequenting stores and restaurants to help the local economy. Black Hills Energy is awaiting Public Utility Commission approval to build additional wind turbines on the site.
