County gets voting update

by Larry Patrick
WALSENBURG — It was a short agenda for the Huerfano County Commissioners as they received mostly reports on a number of issues.
County Clerk Judy Benine said that Oct. 9th is the final day for people to register to vote. As a reminder, if you have changed your address or marital status since the last election you need to make those changes known for eligibility.
Early voting begins on Oct. 22nd for those signed up for mail-in ballots or absentee ballots. There will be polling places available in Walsenburg, La Veta and Gardner as required during presidential election years.
Benine says many people are getting registered locally and statewide because of the issues and candidates in this year’s election.
The commissioners approved the reappointment of Jerry Skrzynear along with new appointees Suzanne Watson and Albert Galvan to the Board of Trustees of the Spanish Peaks Library District.
Commissioner Art Bobian said he met this week with a company representative interested in putting in a 80 to 100 turbine wind farm. They expect to ask the commissioners soon for permission to put up a wind tower on the McKennon ranch for testing.
Shell Oil representatives showed improvements they have done to the road near their drilling site. Shell plans to begin drilling for oil later this month or in early November. They also put up sound barriers to reduce noise pollution.
A mistaken property lien put on land owned by Harold Vargas and his son was taken off after the Vargas’s brought the matter to the commissioners last week. The lien had been placed on the wrong address. Other issues still remain with the land.
