Community Action Plan RECAP

by William J. Bechaver

HUERFANO- The Huerfano County Action Plan review took place last Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Huerfano County Community Center.  Many of the people taking part in Wednesday’s review were the same ones who helped with the assessment and the action plan.

The meeting was the third and most important step in the assessment and review process so far. Cleverly deemed the RECAP, its purpose was to revisit the goals set last year. The four groups assigned to the four areas for improvement performed a self-evaluation and reported their progress to the larger group.

The four areas are  as follows: Quality Of Life, Business Development, Tourism Development, and Workforce And Education.

Progress has been made by the group charged with Quality Of Life. They are creating a directory of county organizations for easy access to some of our important resources.

Business Development is focusing on making our area more receptive to new businesses as well as developing the assets we already have, such as our tourist trade.

Tourism Development is  interested in capitalizing on the excursion train that runs from the San Luis Valley into La Veta.  They are developing a plan to augment the experience of tourists.

The final group’s focus is on Workforce and Education. Their primary goal seems to be to assess and collate all of the programs and resources that are already in existence. Then, after that assessment, to recognize where our county is lacking and fill in the gaps.
