Commissioners deny Rocky Mountain SER

by Larry Patrick

WALSENBURG- The Huerfano County Commissioners decided against sending a letter of support for Rocky Mountain Ser for funding  with Workforce Investment Act funds for providing employment and job training services in Huerfano County. The Commissioners listened to a presentation by Leon Ortega of Rocky Mountain Ser asking for a letter of support that he says other counties have sent on behalf of his group. The state is looking to cut the number of full time employees at the Workforce Centers and coming up with a different model of operating. The Commissioners addressed their concerns after the group had left  saying there were some concerns about fiscal responsibilities on counties. That was the understanding of Commissioner Art Bobian who attended other meetings on the matter with other county staff.

In other action, the County is asking for an additional $160,000 in funding from the Department of Local Affairs for the construction of the waste transfer station. The bids for the building came in much higher than expected bringing the total costs to about $935,000. It should be open this spring for residents.
