Commissioners awarded more grant funds

by Larry Patrick

WALSENBURG-  The Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) has notified the Huerfano County Commissioners that they will receive an additional $115,000 for the completion of the waste transfer station. The Commissioners had requested $158,000 so there is a shortfall. County administrator, John Galusha, said it will make for a tight squeeze on the project but that they will get it done. No exact opening date has been set although Galusha has been shooting for May 1st.  It all depends upon when the compactors and rollers arrive. A late April date is set for that to occur. The Commissioners did approve the purchase of a skid steer loader to be used for the waste transfer station from Wagner Rents at a cost of $15,240.

The Walsenburg Golf Association requested $5,000 that the County has donated from lottery funds each year. The request for the funds were granted. The Commissioners also okayed a $100 donation request from El Fandango.

The first community workshop for the public to go over the proposed Huerfano County Land Use Guide and Comprehensive Plan will be held on Friday, April 17 from 4-7 pm  and Saturday, April 18 from noon to 5 pm.  The meetings will be held at the Huerfano County Community Center. Commissioners are urging the public to attend and give their input.

The Board of Assessment Appeals set the value of the  CCA prison in Walsenburg following an appeal of the County Assessors Office figures. The amount is $21,000 less for the county.
