Colorado and Huerfano unemployment rates still bleak but with silver lining

by William T. Beverly, Ph.D.

WALSENBURG- Huerfano County’s November 2010 unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) was reported at 11.5 percent by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.  This is an increase of .7 percent from October 2010’s figure of 10.8 percent, and an increase of 3.3 percent over last November’s rate of 8.2 percent.

The unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) increased in 62 of Colorado’s 64 counties and decreased in two.  It increased in 45 counties this time last year.  The lowest county unemployment rate was 3.9 percent in Cheyenne County and the highest was 15.8 percent in Dolores County.

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment reported that Colorado’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased two-tenths of one percentage point to 8.6 percent in November 2010.

The possibly hopeful news here is that according to Executive Director, Donald J. Mares, “For the first time in three years we’ve now had three consecutive months of wage and salary job growth.”  He added, “While the unemployment rate is increasing at the same time we’re adding jobs, this seeming contradiction is easily explained by the number of people returning to the labor force this month.”
