National Hispanic Heritage Month

OUR WORLD — Celebrated between September 15 and October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures and histories of people in the US who came from, or whose ancestors came from, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, South America, and Spain. This years theme “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope” is a story well-known in the Hispanic community. It highlights how steep challenges emulate how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto resilience and hope.
Take time to reflect on all of the contributions Hispanics have made in the past, consider how many more contributions will continue to be made in the future, and remember that we are stronger when we work together.

Human Rights at the Philosophy Café

OUR WORLD — Human Rights – we hear about them almost every day in a variety of contexts. “Human right violations of prisoners, of people with disabilities, of immigrants/refugees, of women etc.”
But we rarely pause to think about what Human Rights actually are and what the foundation is for the concept of Human Rights. It’s not just a legal theme, or political theme, but also a philosophical theme.
Modern philosophy, starting with Kant, views a human right as a special sort of inherent right, that humans have because they are special beings, namely human beings. Some view human rights as ‘made up’ concepts, political fabrications. Others say they are (God-given) morally significant natural rights, standards independent from political or cultural context. Some don’t tie it to a moral foundation, but to a more existentialist perspective: humans as beings with special capacities such as autonomy, critical thinking abilities, aspirations, decision making. Some associate human rights strongly with legal frameworks, such as international conventions.
So let’s explore this together during our next Philosophy Cafe on Monday evening, October 11th at 5p.m. This discussion will take place on Zoom, so in order to RSVP for the event and receive a link to the discussion as well as associated readings, email Tom Potter at tom.potter@trinidad.co.gov

John Mall Homecoming Weekend
UPDATE

WALSENBURG – John Mall High School’s homecoming festivities, slated for this week, have been postponed as a result of several recent challenges the school has faced.
The school just returned to in-person learning last Friday, after a COVID-19 outbreak forced two weeks of remote classes. On Monday, some 20 students, mainly freshmen and a few sophomores, were sent home to quarantine because  they had come in contact with a staff member who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, according to Huerfano School District RE-1 Superintendent Mike Moore.
In addition, he said inclement weather predicted for Friday put the parade in doubt and Friday night’s homecoming football game cannot be played because opponent Sargent High School had to postpone because they are also in quarantine.
“The principal wants to ensure that all students and grade levels are able to participate,” Moore said.
He said the school will hold a homecoming, but the date has not yet been determined.

In 1974 John Nichol published a novel titled the Milagro Beanfield War, a comical yet heartfelt tale of one town’s resistance against a big business with political backing.  Now almost 50 years, the story still has relevance with the gentrification and scarcity of water being topics that have yet to be resolved.14 years later, Director Robert Redford turned the novel into a movie. Filmed in Truchas, New Mexico, the film is set in the fictional town of Milagro population 426 and tells one man’s struggle as he defends his small beanfield against big business and pressure from the state.

Freezes distinct fusion of 60s pop and modern psychedelia has infatuated audiences across the US & Canada. Infamous for tireless DIY touring (400 shows since 2016) and prolific composition (20+ albums since 2012), his monstrous stage presence & Beach Boys harmonies convert lifelong fans at every show.
Future Crib is a five-piece band of creatives based in Nashville, TN, that deliver dynamic performances that bounce between poppy make-you-wanna-dance tunes and experimental yet engaging tracks that prod at lifes shared realities. Theres a clear preference for good songs and exciting sounds over genre bounds and expectations, and this is evident on their newalbum, Full Time Smile, which released in
September. Over all, Future Crib creates music for everyone, inviting all to a fun,

Blue Water Highway at the ‘Dad Lounge

TRINIDAD  — On Friday, October 8th, Blue Water Highway will be playing at the Trinidad Lounge. Blue Water Highway comes from the working class, coastal town background that has informed the work of so many classic American musicians. They take their name from the roadway that links their hometown of Lake Jackson, Texas to Galveston, where the cops, the teachers, and the chemical plant workers travel to work hard and to play hard, blowing off steam, dancing to their favorite bands. Blue Water Highway’s music is the soundtrack for their lives.
Doors open at 7p.m. with an 8p.m.ish show start. Tickets are $10, and you must be 21 or older to attend.

Riley Downing and Kassi Valazza at the ‘Dad Lounge

TRINIDAD  — On Monday, October 11th, Riley Downing and his band with Kassi Valazza will be performing at the Trinidad Lounge.
You may know Downing from his work with acclaimed New Orleans combo the Deslondes, or perhaps from his similarly rootsy and wide-ranging catalog of songs with the Tumbleweeds. Indeed, the Missouri-based singer/songwriter’s ability to set gripping, evocative narratives within soundscapes that weave together country, blues, folk, R&B, bluegrass, rock, soul, and  whatever else catches his ear is something that, once you hear it, is hard to shake free from.
Doors open at 7p.m. with an 8p.m.ish show start. Tickets are $12, and you must be 21 or older to attend.

Trinidad Housing Survey

TRINIDAD  — As Trinidad grows, we are faced with the challenge of creating new housing and facilitating the increase in economic activity that comes along with growth. Where that growth will take place and how will it change the character of existing neighborhoods is a question of great importance and one that is shaped by how the city regulates land use.
Now we are trying to allow for new growth that allows for aging in place and promotes economic
development and vibrancy, so we have launched a survey to guide our actions and align that growth with the community’s current values. Some changes may be popular city-wide, while others may only be popular and appropriate in certain neighborhoods or parts of town. The goal is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but to ensure that new development is attractive and serves the community’s current and future needs.
Please follow this link to complete the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Trinidad

The RAD Dirt Fest
TRINIDAD  — The Rad Dirt Fest is taking place this weekend, October 2-3 in and around Trinidad. Keep your eyes peeled for additional bikers and runners, and give ‘em your support!
The ‘Rad Dirt Fest is a new off-road cycle and trail run event based in Trinidad, Colo. The ‘Rad marks the newest event conceptualized by the Life Time Events team, which owns and produces the famed UNBOUND Gravel, the storied Leadville Race Series and the new to-the-lineup Bentonville-based Big Sugar NWA Gravel. The ‘Rad Dirt Fest features impressive views of the Spanish Peaks, small town charm and miles of smooth gravel and trails.
The inaugural event, which will take place Oct. 2-3, 2021 will offer three distance options for athletes on fast, fun and clean gravel: a short 38-mile loop with 2,720 feet of elevation gain, a 90-mile course with 5,000 feet of climbing and a 162-mile grind with 10,800 feet of elevation gain. In its inaugural year, the trail run will take athletes on two scenic routes on the outskirts of Trinidad: an approachable half marathon option with 1,000 feet of elevation gain and a 50k route with 3,200 feet of climbing. As the town evolves and grows its trail network, the running courses will also evolve, allowing The ‘Rad to grow alongside the town of Trinidad.

Philosophy Cafe talks Language

OUR WORLD  —  Join us on Monday evening, Sept. 13 at 5 p.m., when we discuss the Philosophy of language. Café regular Kim Krisco suggested this topic and provided two articles that summarize a history of philosophical thought about language:
Because of the very broad nature of this topic, and because Kim is a writer, I would like to limit the discussion to the written word. Kim suggested as a starting point, “the power and limitation” of the written word. Let’s start with those two thoughts [or are they only words?] and we’ll see where the discussion goes from there. It should be fascinating.
This will be a remote meeting from ZoomMeeting, so to get an access link and in order to see the articles that will be discussed, please email Tom Potter at tom.potter@trinidad.co.gov

Conversation on Science, Religion, Buddhism at Cuchara Mercantile

LA VETA — An amazing opportunity is coming to our area. Dr. David Westmoreland and Dr. Arri Eisen have been involved for over 15 years in an unprecedented intellectual endeavor. This project, the Emory Tibet Science Initiative, became the first major change in the monastic curriculum in six centuries.
The singular backdrop of teaching science to Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns offered provocative insights into how science and religion can work together to enrich each other, as well as to shed light on life and what it means to be a thinking, biological human. Dr. Westmoreland and Dr. Eisen are now both teaching at the Air Force Academy.
They will be sharing their experiences on Saturday Sept. 11 th at 1p.m. at the Cuchara Mercantile. This extraordinary event is brought to you by Mt. Rose Health Center Palliative Care and Hospice and Huajatolla Heritage Foundation that are partnering in a Mindful Aging Program. Donate to help build Animal Shelter

OUR WORLD  —  Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare Association has been collaborating with the City of Trinidad in opening a brand new, modern animal shelter. The beautiful new facility will replace the former city pound, which NAAWA has operated as an animal shelter for the past two decades; the old shelter NAAWA currently operates from is deteriorated and NAAWA’s life-saving work has outgrown the outdated buildings.
In order to get this done, they are running a $25,000 matching challenge, so for a short time, you can double your impact and help finish the new animal shelter. A generous donor is pledging dollar for dollar, to match donations up to a total of $25,000 — making your donation to NAAWA go twice as far! We are challenged to raise $25K in 35 days!
If we succeed, we will have a raised a record breaking total of $50,000! Help us succeed by donating today.

Philosophy Cafe talks Language

OUR WORLD  —  Join us on Monday evening, Sept. 13th at 5 p.m., when we discuss the Philosophy of language.

To see a video about the new shelter and to donate, visit https://www.coloradogives.org/25k35daysmatch

Philosophy Cafe talks Language

OUR WORLD  —  Join us on Monday evening, September 13th at 5 p.m., when we discuss the Philosophy of language.

Community Health Needs Assessment

LAS ANIMAS COUNTY  — Mt. San Rafael is working to complete their Community Health Needs Assessment; an important tool, completed every three years, that identifies key health needs and issues through systematic, comprehensive data collection and analysis.
A community health needs assessment gives organizations, like Mt. San Rafael Hospital, comprehensive information about the community’s current health status, needs, and issues. This information helps develop a community health improvement plan by justifying how and where resources should be allocated to best meet community needs.
To assist with this process is a community survey.  The survey asks about health, current health practices, and impressions of the overall health of the Trinidad community.  The survey is available in both English and Spanish and in paper form or electronic. To complete the survey electronically, use the links below.

Speakers at each site during the two-hour walk will give clues of life 140 years ago up to 90 years ago.  Registration will be at the Huerfano County Community Center, East 10th Street and Russell 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Groups of 20 will start out with their guide along the Cucharas River and then will cover six blocks.  A shuttle bus returns walkers to the starting place.  Cost is $15 and includes handouts.  No advance reservations will be taken.  In case of misty rain the walk will go on as scheduled.  If a downpour begins, the tour is cancelled.  For more information call the Huerfano Heritage Center 719-738-2346 or Carolyn Newman 719-738-2840.  The day of the walk call 719-989-0651.
