Ruben Archuleta on Penitentes

LA VETA- Residents and guests are in for a special treat on Saturday, May 16, with a joint presentation of the La Veta Public Library and Francisco Fort Museum.  Ruben Archuleta, retired Chief of Police, Pueblo, Colorado, will present a fascinating look into the secretive world of the Penitente Brotherhood.  Archuleta has spent years researching the Brotherhood, which came into existence in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.  The myths surrounding the Brotherhood′s secret rites and mortification of the flesh of believers during Holy Week, grew to the point where it was difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction.  From Penitente journals discovered in his grandmother′s trunk, and extensive personal research and photographs, Archuleta gives a factual portrayal of the Penitente life.  He will show his photographs at the La Veta Public Library at 4:30 pm and will follow with a book signing at the Francisco Fort Museum Gift Shop at 5:30 pm.  Archuleta′s books Land of the Penitentes, Land of Tradition and Penitente Renaissance, Manifesting Hope, will be available for purchase and autographing.  For further information please call the Library at 742-3572.
