Walsenburg Community Garden getting started

WALSENBURG- Charles Bryant from the Walsenburg Community Garden would like to get word out to the public about the group’s first meeting of the year.  Topics to be discussed are new additions and membership to the garden for the year, and implementing some kid friendly garden projects in the neighboring playground and the garden its self.  The Walsenburg Community Garden is located at the Walsenburg Community Center in the fenced in area by the play ground.  They had a very successful first year and hope to share this project with more people and get off to an early start.  The meeting will be held Saturday, January 30th at 1pm at the Community center meeting room.  Any one interested can contact Bryant at 738-2696 or Mike Cortes at 746-2385.  They hope to see you all there!

2010 Cost-Share Program

WALSENBURG- The Upper Huerfano Conservation District (UHCD) has received a grant from the State of Colorado through the Department of Agriculture to sponsor another cost-share program in 2010. The 2009 program enabled thirteen projects with an expected soil savings of 2,985 tons over the life of those projects which included: irrigation structure, pipeline and tank, windbreak, solar pump and tank, gated pipe, pond, livestock well, spring development and diversion.

    This program is being operated on a reimbursement basis, and the annual reimbursement limit will be $3,500 per applicant and is available to both small and large acreage landowners. Landowners with approved projects will submit proof of the cost to install the conservation practice and then will be reimbursed for 50% up to $3,500. 

Projects can include : irrigation water management, improvement to plant diversity, increasing woodland productivity, planned grazing systems, improvement to wildlife habitat, and enhancement of riparian areas.

    Interested landowners should contact the Upper Huerfano Conservation District for an application form. The sign-up period will be February 1 – February 17, 2010. The UHCD Board of Supervisors will select projects for funding in February, 2010. Approved projects must be completed by July 31, 2010.

Gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes in town Feb 5

TRINIDAD and WALSENBURG- On Fri. Feb 5th, area Republicans will host meet and greet events for Republican candidate for governor, Dan Maes.  In Trinidad, Maes will speak beginning at 9 am at Trinidad State Junior College, Berg Building, Little Theatre.  He will then drive to Walsenburg to appear at 11:30 am the Huerfano Community Bible Church, 603 Leon Street.  He says that he is fighting for re-energizing Colorado′s economy via a more business-friendly regulatory environment, fiscal  restraint, less government, and states rights; all supported by strong educational options.  www.danmaes.com

Free Facebook class

LA VETA- Does everyone know what your kids (or friends) are doing except you? 

    Do you feel out of the loop?

    Open a Facebook account and keep up with what’s happening in your world.

    Beginning  Facebook will be taught by La Veta Public Library’s Facebook guru, Jordan, on Friday, February 5, from 1 to 3 pm in the Library’s Meeting Room.  Students  will open their own Facebook account and learn the basics of how to add Friends, old and new, This class is free, but you must register as class size is limited.  Only requirement is that you must have an active email account (and know its user name and password).

H1N1 clinic

WALSENBURG- There will be another H1N1 clinic for anyone that has not received an H1N1 vaccine, or children 9 and younger who need a second dose.  Please bring the tan card you received for the first dose. The dates are Wed. Feb 10 and Wed. Feb 24 from 4-7 pm.  Location- at the Health Department,  119 E Fifth Street in Walsenburg.

Pamper yourself SPRHC Foundation Auction and Wine Tasting

WALSENBURG- Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center Foundation announced that it will host its annual Silent Auction and Wine Tasting event, Sat. Feb. 13 at 6 pm in the Spanish Peaks Library.  A limited number of tickets are available for $35 each from Foundation Board members.

    This very special auction event provides a unique opportunity for both beginning and seasoned collectors to purchase an exciting array of artwork.  This year’s art offerings include a few pieces created and donated by Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home Residents (new art students).

      The Foundation is a non-profit organization that maintains a commitment to our community while fostering success by providing scholarships to students from both La Veta and John Mall High School.  This event is more important now than ever.

    The Wine Tasting is provided by Ron and Claudia Scarcella of 38 Special Wines with Hors D ‘Oeuvres catered by the Rosewood Café.

Valentine′s Day – couples′ night out, only of $5

WALSENBURG– Calvary Church, 801 Pennsylvania, is hosting a Chuck Wagon Buffet and Marriage Enrichment Seminar Sunday, February 14, dinner at 5:30 p.m., seminar at 6:00 p.m., $5 per couple, payable at the door.

    Dr. Charles Goza, Calvary pastor, will conduct the 2-hour marriage enrichment session and will look at such areas as 5 Major Marriage Relationships – 6 Stages of Marriage – Causes of Crisis – Developmental Tasks of Marriage – The Marriage Cycle – 5 Reasons Marriages Fail – The Biblical View of Marriage – and Understanding the People You Live With.

Vucetich Steps Aside

HUERFANO- John Vucetich has announced his retirement from the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District effective January 25, 2010.  Vucetich served on the Board for 24 years and served on the HCWCD Advisory Board for several years before his judicial appointment as a Board member.  The Huerfano Journal will have a full story on Vucetich in next week’s edition.
