by Mark Craddock
LA VETA — Four games into the new season, it’s been an up-and-down ride for the La Veta Redhawks. Both the boys and girls squads stand at 2-2 but, with no league games yet, both remain atop the 1A Fishers Peak league.

On Nov. 28, the Hawks started their season against Creede. The boys won their end of the outing 61-44. High scorers were Trey Medina and Isiah Rodriguez with 17 points each. Vicente Vallejos knocked down nine points and Lukas Ozzello scooped up nine rebounds.

The Lady Hawks had a tight game against Creede, coming out on top 36-35. Perennial offensive powerhouse Aspen Autry sunk 20 points and Jaiden Goemmer added another eight. Goemmer led the team in rebounds with 14.

On Dec. 2, the boys lost 52-26 to Evangelical Christian Academy. The Ladies lost their outing 58-22.

In Dec. 8 tournament play, both teams lost their outings with Las Animas; the boys 61-31 and the girls 60-17.

But the Redhawks soared at home Dec. 9 against Manzanola. The boys won their game 74-39 behind the offensive efforts of Medina and Musgrave, each of whom put 17 points on the scoreboard. The Lady Hawks handed Manzanola a 49-2 drubbing in front of the home crowd. Once again, Autry dominated the scoring with 34 point.

The Redhawks will travel to Hoehne today for a non-conference showdown with the Farmers.

The games begin at 4:30 p.m.
