TRINIDAD — 44-year-old Travis Russell, a Las Animas County Sheriff’s Deputy, died after his patrol vehicle crashed into a parked SUV near the corner of Prospect St. and Stonewall Ave. close to Central Park at about 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 1. A statement released by the Colorado State Patrol said Deputy Russell died after the patrol vehicle crashed and rolled onto its side. Travis Russell died at Mount San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad after the crash. Authorities said Russell was on duty but wasn’t responding to a call. CHP said the SUV Travis was driving veered across traffic and hit an unoccupied vehicle. The 2009 Ford Expedition Las Animas County Sheriff’s deputy vehicle was traveling eastbound on Stonewall Avenue just west of Prospect Street when the deputy’s vehicle veered across the westbound lanes of Stonewall Avenue striking the front of an unoccupied 1990 Toyota 4-Runner. Following the collision, the deputy’s vehicle continued eastbound where it rolled onto its passenger side. Deputy Russell was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. The cause of death of the deputy will be determined by the Las Animas County Coroner. This crash remains under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol.
