LA VETA — Representing the La Veta Cuchara Chamber of Commerce, former town board member Logan Taggart approached the board with an idea to develop a town slogan. Taggart explained the idea is in its early stages but the general plan is to have people submit ideas and then narrow the field to a top five then vote to choose the best one. Mayor Brgoch joked how was it that the town had gone for 150 years without a slogan? He then suggested that the chamber flesh the idea out and return to the board with a more formal proposal. Taggart agreed adding that if the idea goes as planned the board would need to sign off on the slogan to make it ‘official’. Taggart, again representing the chamber, asked for street closures on July 4th for the annual holiday parade. He noted that in an effort to not conflict with Cuchara’s 4th of July parade, which is always held on the morning of July 4th, La Veta’s parade will start later with the lineup at 1 pm and the parade beginning at 2 pm. The board approved the request and will cover the parade under the town’s insurance policy. Under old business, the board was provided with an update, by engineer Mark Hornberger on the sewer improvement project. Hornberger said that Segment A was complete and they are moving to Segment H, with Segments K and L to follow. The town clerk and Hornberger both reiterated that the town has been and will be
notifying residents ahead of time, when the work will affect their water and sewer usage. Hornberger stressed that for short periods of time residents will not be able to flush toilets, use dishwashers, etc. during certain operations. Washing one’s hands and small amounts of water releases are not a problem, but large releases can be. The town clean-up has been modified due to a lack of large roll-off dumpsters being available in May. On May 16th the burn pile will be open for yard waste only from 9 am until noon. Then, on June 6th, two large dumpsters will be available at the fairgrounds from 9 am until 3 pm along with a trailer for large appliances. The town received four applications for deputy marshal with two of those coming from individuals that are already certified in law enforcement. Those two candidates will be interviewed by the board towards the end of May. They will also undergo background checks and a peer review of area law enforcement personnel being assembled by Marshal Willburn. The board approved the hiring of Joel Matthews as a summer worker for the Francisco Fort Museum. She will work 20 hours per week at $8.25 per hour. The board voted to let two bids for work on town buildings. One project is the exterior painting of the town hall, re-staining of decks, and some interior floor repair/refinishing. The other bid is for roof repairs on the town maintenance building.
