And Now there are three

By David Tesitor

Denver CO- The Pepsi Center- The second round action is over and for three wrestlers, Adam Ortivez of La Veta and Lorenzo Trujillo and Jacob Tenorio of John Mall their march is still alive. Ortivez will wrestle in the semi-finals tonight at about seven pm. He is two wins away from a state championship. Dalton Randolph stands in his way. Randolph, a junior entered the tournament as the number four wrestler in the state. A victory tonight could set up a rematch of the Region Two finals pitting Ortiz against Jake Milberger of Fowler. Adam is 2-0 against the Fowler opponent. Last year, Ortivez lost his semi final match and placed third in the tournament. He is looking to be the first La Veta wrestler to wrestle in a championship match since 1991, when his father Ron, wrestled for the championship.
Lorenzo Trujillo lost his championship quarter final by pin in a time of 3:19. The loss drops him into the consolation quarter finals where he will meet Justin Leoniz of Eads. If Lorenzo is to place, he needs to win his next two matches. His next bout will be this evening beginning at 5:45. At this point in the tournament, the heavyweight division has been rocked with upsets, sending ranked wrestlers to the lower brackets. A loss tonight will send Lorenzo home.
The last wrestler to advance in tournament action is Jacob Tenorio who overcame a 2-0 deficit after the first period. He opened the second with a take down and near pin to take a 3-2 lead and never looked back. He scored three more points before he pinned Kanin Wadsworth of north Park in a time of 2:26. He will face Garrett Seawald of Merino tonight in the consolation quarter finals. Like Trujillo, he needs a win to continue. Seawald is a sophomore with a record of 17-6 and is the fifth ranked wrestler in the state. Seawald was upset in his opening bout by Kent Miller.
