1893: Crestones [Chama] has a large new school addition for the convenience of the 80 scholars there. J.P. Deus is teaching the boys and Mrs. Pearl Sawdy has the girls.
1900: Guadalupa Talmadge of Rouse was granted a pension from her husband Thomas’s military service in two wars, as a member of the U.S. Regulars and as an old Indian fighter and scout.
1907: A company has been formed by Manuel Martinez, F.D. Andrews, Antonio T. Bustos and James Stevens to build a farmers’ telephone line between here and Cucharas Junction.
1915: A group of men employed by the California Auto Club, driving a Pathfinder automobile, has been snowbound in town the past several days.
1922: Crist Freize is confined to the house this week so his Hupmobile has not been in service in the Marshall Taxi Company.
1928: Nearly 600 striking miners and 50 cars followed the casket of Paul Chebuhar, 15, to the St. Mary cemetery Sunday afternoon.
1934: Mr. and Mrs. Sumner Jellison are the proud parents of twin baby girls. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Jellison are the grandparents.
1941: About 830 old age pensioners, the blind, and dependent children will share $33,254.65 in welfare this month.
1948: About $16,770 was raised on the first day of solicitation for the proposed St. Therese Hospital which is to be built in the northwest part of the city.
1954: The City of Walsenburg was presented with a framed commendation from the American Auto Association for its safety record of no pedestrian deaths during 1952.
1961: A total of $174,078 was paid out in unemployment insurance during 1960, according to John George, office manager. The funds were paid out to 5,150 claimants.
1968: Instead of having their regular meeting, the Hobbyettes Club had a baby shower for Mrs. Johnny Joe Corsentino.
1974: A Wichita man, Robert C. Martin, has assumed the law offices of Jenkins and Sandstrom at 518 Main in Walsenburg.
1980: Not one bid was received Monday in the auction of the county owned building at Fifth and Main streets.
1986: The Huerfano County Democratic Central Committee has endorsed County Judge Claude Appel for the position of Third Judicial District Judge after the retirement of Albert J. Tomsic.
1993: American Legion and VFW members have expressed opposition to the county commissioners for not giving county employees Veterans Day as a holiday and instead giving them the day off the Friday after Thanksgiving.
La Veta
1894: The boys of La Veta had a dance of their own Monday night with their lassies and it lasted from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m.
1902: The orders for ice cannot be filled at this time due to the pleasant weather. The ice is only nine inches thick.
1909: Enrolled in the first through eighth grades are 213 children under Miss Vories, Miss Rouark, W.P. Powell and Ada J. Armstrong, with the largest class the first grade with 70 students.
1915: The federal troops which have been stationed in this immediate vicinity for the past nine months were removed on Monday but the citizens have now learned that all the guns they had ‘voluntarily’ given up had been sent to Fort Logan and no assurance has been made they will ever be returned.
1923: Joe K. Kincaid and his daughter Laura miraculously escaped serious injury when their car was struck by a train as they were crossing the railroad tracks on Main Street.
1930: Elected officers of the First National Bank of La Veta were William Kincaid, president, E.C. Stream, vice president, W.H. Harrison, cashier and the directors are C.B. Frink, Dr. L.W. Lee and W.H. Harrison.
1936: A.B. Dickinson is installing a windmill to supply the power for a light plant at his house on the hill above La Veta.
1942: Miss Roberta Boyd has announced she will not attempt to reopen her theater that was destroyed by fire Christmas Day and that she is moving to Santa Fe.
1948: Some 55 members of the La Veta committee for the St. Therese Hospital building fund met in Kincaid Hall Sunday afternoon. Peter E. Gross is chairman.
1955: La Veta School District 3-A will receive $13,048.36 from the state.
1963: A $380,000 project was approved by the state for the improvement of Highway 111, with the major part of it to be used on the “Circle Drive” between Cuchara and Monument Lake.
1969: La Veta’s only remaining hotel, the Park Lane, was destroyed Sunday morning by fire which gutted the two-story frame and stone building on Ryus Avenue. Most of the nine people staying there were trainmen of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad and none were injured.
1975: The county’s new $37,000 snow blower has been busy around La Veta and Cuchara where high winds have caused serious drifting.
1981: The high school wrestling team won at the Westcliffe tournament over 10 other teams. Earning first place honors were Eric Kreutzer, Floyd Archuleta and Joe Hockett.
1988: A group of 10 hardy souls tried out the new cross country ski course at Grandote golf course Saturday night in the light of the full moon.
