County basketball heats up the gym

by Dreama Ortivez
HUERFANO — Tuesday night, the La Veta gym was packed full of fired-up athletes and fans as the Redskins played the John Mall Panthers. Both teams played hard and with a lot of determination.
The first game was JV girls and the La Veta girls won 18-12 over the Panther ladies. JV boys were up next, and the Panthers landed a victory over the Redskins 40-32. The varsity girls then took the court. Both teams played hard but the Lady Redskins defeated the Lady Panthers 46-24.
The game of the night was the varsity boys. The fans in the stands from both sides were on their feet for most of the game as the boys from both teams played extremely well, showing heart, determination and dedication.
In the first half of the game, the Redskins were leading the Panthers but it did not take long before the Panthers were hitting the hoops.
By the 4th quarter, the Redskins were up by 6 points but the fighting Panthers continued to play hard and tie the game up. The crowds from both sides were cheering for the teams; as at this point it was anyone’s ball game. With two and half minutes left, both teams ended up with a technical foul, senior Brandon Morgan from the Redskins made both free throws and Panthers sophomore Clay Berger made both of his free throw shots. Both teams fought very hard these last two minutes to try to capture that victory. The Redskins found themselves a victory over the Panthers, 46-43.
Both teams deserve credit as all of the athletes played extremely hard and with a lot of dedication.
Good job Redskins and Panthers. What a way to keep the crowd on their feet.
