Black Diamond Jubilee activities abound

by Larry Patrick
WALSENBURG- The 15th annual Black Diamond Jubilee is coming up next week, Friday, June 17th and Saturday, June 18th in downtown Walsenburg. This year has some new exciting activities for people to enjoy. First of all, there will be a carnival coming in next Wednesday and staying through Sunday. The carnival will be located at Fiesta Park, across from the courthouse and also on Russell Street between the railroad tracks and 5th Street. Rides, games & food will keep attendees busy.
Merchants in the county are providing gift certificates that the Huerfano County Chamber of Commerce will be raffling off every hour during the day on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are now being sold for $1 each or 6 for $5. In addition, a 50/50 cash raffle drawing will be held every two hours on Friday and Saturday, during the day, with the winner getting half the jackpot on money collected in that 2 hour period.
A big pancake breakfast will be held inside the La Plaza Inn on West 6th Street Saturday morning from 7-10 a.m. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, juice & coffee will be served. Tickets are available from Chamber board members now. Prices are $6 for adults & $5 for seniors (65 & over) & children (6 to 12), if purchased in advance. It’s a dollar more at the door. Jeff & Karen Wilson of LaPlaza Inn are providing their facility free of charge to the Chamber to provide an excellent atmosphere to enjoy breakfast.
The festivities at Black Diamond Jubilee will take place on W. 6th Street again this year. There will be vendors, a beer garden, car show and entertainment. This year the Jubilee will feature the Paberback Writers Band on Friday night. They have performed at the Open Mic nights in La Veta and are a popular band throughout parts of Colorado. Their performance will be 8 pm to midnight. On Saturday night, Turning Point Band will perform from 8 to midnight. Other talented local singers and groups will entertain on Friday and Saturday during the day. The Chamber of Commerce is interested in additional local performers wanting to showcase their talent. Contact the Chamber at 719-738-1065.
A car show, pony rides, carnival rides, vendors, beer garden, food and fun with family and friends will make for a great time. Chamber President Nancy Lave also is looking for additional vendors to round out the festivities. You can call 719-738-1065. Vendor space is still available.
Walsenburg merchants are urged to participate with sidewalk sales in front of their stores or to consider a booth on W. 6th where a lot of the action is occurring. As always, the Chamber is hoping for good weather and most of all that you will take some time to go to the event to make it successful.
