WALSENBURG- The Huerfano World Journal talked with Steve Owen at CCA headquarters this week about any new developments that may be in the works to reopen the CCA prison in Walsenburg.
Owen, the public relations officer for the CCA Company, said that virtually nothing has changed. The last news release they had was several months ago when it was announced that CCA had a tentative deal with the State of California to take prisoners to the Crowley County CCA facility in Colorado. Speculation was that the prisoners at Crowley County might then be moved to the Walsenburg facility and reopen.
Since those discussions, California has a new governor, Jerry Brown, and no progress has been made on prisoner transfers. Owen says the new California administration has just come on board so they are looking at all aspects of the troublesome California economy. He remains optimistic that the previous plans of bringing in California prisoners will go through but there still is no signed deal. If things work out, the plans were scheduled to go into effect in early 2012.
