Obituary- Andrew Schafer

Andrew Charles (Bud) Schafer
8-2-1920 ~ 1-12-2011

    Bud Schafer was born in Walsenburg to Andrew C.  Schafer Jr. and Ruth (Gilmore) Schafer on August 8, 1920, and passed away on December 12, 2011 in Reno, Nevada.
    Bud graduated from Huerfano County High School in 1938.  He attended college at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, then went directly into the Air Force from there.
    Bud was a pilot of a B-24 in WWII.  He was a Safeway store manager in Palo Alto, California, and lived in California most of his married life until moving to Reno, Nevada.    He and his wife Katie (Dunich) were married 68 years. 
    Bud’s family has deep roots in Huerfano County.  His grandparents, Andrew (Andy) Christian Schafer Sr. and Lillian (Black) Schafer,  were Huerfano County pioneers.   Andrew Sr, was married three times. He had a daughter, Alvena Long, with his first wife Lillian.  When she died, he remarried Julie Wagner and they had five children, Andrew C. Schafer Jr,  Fred W., William B. (Billy),  Lucille Krier, and Fern Lawson.    Bud’s father, Andrew Schafer Jr.,  was mayor of Walsenburg in the late 30s and early 40s.   The whole family was involved in the meat packing and market business.  They were owners of the Schwab-Schafer meat packing plant, built in 1923 and located on Ideal Road.  The company later continued under the name of the Schafer Packing Co.    They were also wholesale meat dealers all over the county, and had Schafer’s Meat Market at 608 S. Main Street in Walsenburg.  Bud worked there as a young man when he was in high school.  
    Bud’s parents, Andrew C. Jr. and Ruth Schafer, had three children, Bud, Barbara Elizabeth Peterson, and John (Jack) Wilfred Schafer.
    Bud was predeceased by his parents, his sister Barbara, and his cousins William (Bill) Schafer Jr., and Clifford Lawsen.
    He is survived by his wife Katie; and two children, Andrew Charles (Sally)  Schafer IV of Novato, CA and Debbie (Tom) Braun of Aptos, CA; two grandchildren and one great grandchild.   He is also survived by his brother Jack (Carlene) Schafer of Evans, Colorado and numerous cousins including Pauline Santi, Jewel Geiger, and Ron Schafer of Walsenburg, CO,  Phyllis Krier Donelly of Broomfie;ld, CO,  Carol McInnis of Grand Junction, CO, Ruby Mae Long of Golden, CO and Bob Lawson of Denver, CO.
    No services were held at his request.
