Solar farm application withdrawn

MONTE VISTA- FirstSolar, the company who was planning on building a 150 megawatt solar energy farm on 2,100 acres on federal land near Saguache, has withdrawn its application.

FirstSolar spokesman Alan Bernheimer said “Withdrawing our application for this project permits us to focus our work with the BLM on higher priority projects that have fewer transmission or other constraints.”

What this means for Tri-State energy’s plan to run a transmission line through Huerfano County into the San LuisValley is unknown at this early juncture.

FirstSolar, which both manufactures solar panels and designs utility-scale plants, purchased development rights to the project in March from OptiSolar, a Hayward, Calif., company.  FirstSolar is based in Arizona.
