Transmission line to bring tax revenue

by Larry Patrick

WALSENBURG- The controversial transmission line to be built by Tri-State will bring financial rewards to Huerfano County.  The Huerfano County Commissioners reported that preliminary estimates show that $690,000 in annual tax revenue will be received from the project. The Public Utilities Commission will give the approval of what route will be used in building the lines through Huerfano County to the San Luis Valley.  The biggest controversy deals with the numerous routes proposed.  Many people don’t want the transmission lines running through their area.  A meeting is slated for Nov. 9 in Walsenburg with the PUC at the Huerfano County Community Center.  A large crowd is expected to be on hand to voice their concerns about the project and the possible path the transmission lines will take.

Debra Malone gave a report from the Tourism Board on holiday sign promotions for Huerfano County.  The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is planning train trips with Santa and also providing Christmas performances on their trains for the public.  The railroad will be paying and promoting the holiday train rides on the billboard along Hwy. 160, just west of Walsenburg.

Malone said a statewide tourism conference was held in Pueblo recently with Carolyn Newman of Walsenburg getting the opportunity to address the 500 people in attendance about tourism opportunities in this area. Malone called the opportunity a big boost for recognition for Huerfano County and several surrounding counties.
