Super Groundhog Brunch
WALSENBURG- The Huerfano County Chamber of Commerce′s Annual Groundhog Breakfast is February 1st from 9 am to 1 pm. Start off your Super Bowl morning with a hearty breakfast served up at the Walsenburg Golf Course by your local Chamber of Commerce. We are having pancakes, sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, orange juice and coffee. Adults are $7. Seniors and Children under 10 are $5. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!
$6,000 at Super Bowl party!
WALSENBURG- WOW! Donations for the Super Bowl party and auction at the Walsenburg Golf Course have been amazing with over $6,000 worth of donations, and more expected. Many people have said they are worried about driving back from the golf course, SO, a bus has been rented to bring people out and take them back. The bus will leave the Safeway parking lot at 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 and then take people to their homes at 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 pm. They’re working their behinds off to make it easy to attend. Ticket sales have been slow so the auction items may be real cheap! Tickets are available at the golf course for $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Domestic beer is $2 and well drinks $3 from 2:00 to 8:00. Seating is limited to 60 people so get your tickets before Sunday.
Water Board meets Monday
WALSENBURG- The Board of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District will meet at 5:30 pm on Mon. Feb. 2, 2009 at City Hall, 525 S. Albert Ave., Walsenburg. The meeting is open to the public.
Zoo Classes
PUEBLO- The Pueblo Zoo is currently accepting registration for their Landscape Design series. All classes are held at the Pueblo Zoo from 6-9 p.m. The classes are as follows:

Water District special meeting
WALSENBURG- The Board of the Huerfano County Water Conservancy District will hold a special meeting at 6 pm on Wed. Feb. 4, 2009 at the County Commissioners board room, County Courthouse, 401 Main Street, Walsenburg. The Gardner water situation will be discussed. The meeting is open to the public.
AARP
WALSENBURG– AARP will hold their meeting, Feb. 6, 2009, at the Huerfano County Community Center at 11:30 am.
RPOA
WALSENBURG– There will be a RPOA (Rural Property Owners Alliance) meeting on Sat. Feb. 7 from 10 am to 2 pm.
The program will be "Welcome back Jim Conley" and goals for the 2009 meetings will be discussed. As always, RPOA meetings are held at the Huerfano County Community Center on 928 Russell Avenue in Walsenburg.
Historical meeting postponed
WALSENBURG- Postponement of the Huerfano County Historical Society board monthly meeting is necessary because several members will be attending the Colorado Preservation Inc. conference in Denver. The new HCHS meeting date is Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 5:30 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce office (Walsenburg rail depot). Also no workdays at the Tirey Local History Center are scheduled for next week. Interested persons may watch news media and CBS Channel 4 on Thursday, Feb. 5, for a possible Walsenburg announcement.
Rep. McKinley to chair new “property rights committee”
DENVER- State Representative Wes McKinley (D-Walsh) will chair a newly-formed ad-hoc committee to review some of the issues surrounding "property rights" in Colorado. The bi-partisan committee, mostly comprised of representatives from rural areas, includes Reps. Randy Baumgardner, Ed Casso, Jeanne Labuda, Ellen Roberts, Jerry Sonnenburg, and Ed Vigil.
Rep. McKinley is a long-time foe of the US Army’s attempts to expand the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site further into his house district in the south-east part of the state.
Community service grants
TRINIDAD- The Bar NI Ranch Community Service Fund is accepting grant proposals from both previous as well as new applicants. Grants may be awarded in the areas of education, youth development, environment and conservation, health and human services and civic or public benefit. Grant awards will be made to 501c3, non-profit organizations in the Purgatory Valley with projects that serve to inspire awareness, expand horizons, create independence and foster personal growth. Projects focusing on youth and environmental education are encouraged, in particular, projects exploring creative ways to ignite the spirit, facilitate dreams and address root causes of problems rather than just treat affected conditions.
