Lathrop Park’s Program

LATHROP- On Friday Aug 8 at 7 pm come and enjoy a concert by the Huerfano Winds, a brass, woodwind, and percussion ensemble who will play a selection of music from around the world.  The distinct folk melodies, dance rythms, and tone colors of each country reflects its culture, natural resources, and unique physical environment.  Please join the Winds at the Amphitheater for an entertaining and educational evening of nationalistic music.

      Then on Saturday, August 9, 2008, also at 7 pm,

Vince Matthews, Senior Editor & State Geologist will present Messages in Stone: Colorado’s Colorful Geology. Dr. Matthews will present a slide-show with samplings of Colorado’s world-class geology that creates our world-class scenery. Please note that this presentation will take place at the Visitor’s Center multi-purpose room due to the slide show presentation. After the presentation, Dr. Matthews will be available for signing books. All events are free.

United Church now at 10 am

WALSENBURG-  The United Church of Walsenburg has changed the worship time to 10 am, with Sunday school at 9 am for the remainder of the summer.

   

Kick-Off Party

LA VETA- There will be a kick-off wine and cheese reception party for the SPACe Gallery expansion at the Parkside Gallery in La Veta on Sunday August 10, from 4 to 6 pm.  Come along and findo out about the Gallery’s architectural and fundraising plans.

Great Readers

WALSENBURG- Robbie Sims is the Grand Prize winner of the 2008 Summer Reading program "Metamorphosis" at the Spanish Peaks Library District.  Robbie read a total of 331 books over the course of two months and participated in various activities and programs to earn a total of 3,496 points.  This is the second year in a row that Robbie has been the SRP grand prize winner.  Becky Bressan was the programs runner-up.  She read a total of 301 books and garnered 3,185 points during the program.  There was a total of 16 Young Adult/Teen participants in this years program with a grand total of 742 books read.

Broncos in the ‘burg

WALSENBURG- The Denver Bronco Organization will be in town Wednesday, August 13 to promote the “Bronco Country Flag Campaign.”  They would like as many members of the community to come and sign a Denver Bronco flag which they will take back to Denver and fly at INVESCO Field.  The 90 minute event will be video taped and the tape will be shown at one of the home games this season.

     The City of Walsenburg  invites everyone to come.  There will be a barbeque starting at 12 noon at City Park, 700 W. 7th St. and the Denver Bronco program will start at 2 pm.

    We would also like to invite individuals, organizations, etc to assist in decorating a section of fencing around City Park to promote the event.  Please contact City Hall 738-1048 for further details on this event.
