Studio 909 Open House

WALSENBURG-  The Huerfano County Chamber of Commerce will hold an open house for Studio 909 on Friday June 13, 2008 from 2 to 4 pm, at 909 South Main Street in Walsenburg.  There will be hourly drawings for gifts and an opportunity to meet one of Huerfano County’s newest businesses.

    Other businesses are invited to become chamber members, and see what the Chamber can do for them.

Cancer Relay for Life

HUERFANO- The Huefano County Relay for Life is tomorrow, Friday June 13.   There are 24 teams participating to raise money for cancer research:  Chazzmm (captain Shea Brgoch); D&P Yellow Brick Road Pavers (captain Toni Brgoch); Dorothy’s Family (captain Angela Bird); Em & Em’s (captain Joni Ugolini); Flying Monkeys (captain Renea McGee); Guardsmen (captain Bobbi Jo Trujillo); Holy Rollers (captain Marilyn Keagle); Huerfano Cafe (captain Debbie Reynolds); Huerfano Journal (captain Gretchen Orr); Jammie Joggers (captain Kelly Popejoy); John Mall High School (captain Hallie Homerding); La Veta Liquors Walk-a-holics (captain Barrett Taft); Munchkin Angels (captain Edie Pene); Munchkin Madness (captain Edie Pene);  Munchkin Spirit (captain Edie Pene); Munchkin Kids (captain Edie Pene); Munchkins (captain Edie Pene); Paperback Trading Post (captain Danelle Martinez); Spanish Peaks Lollipop Guild (captain Mary Cope); The No-Brainers (captain Laurie Erwin); Tin Men (captain Kay Fette); Toto’s Troopers (captain Julia Marchant); Wizards (captain Bernice Angely); and Zorbos (captain Shea Brgoch). 

    The relay will kick off at 5:30 pm when all those who have survived cancer are invited to come to the complimentary Survivors’ Dinner at Sammie’s Restaurant in La Veta.

Paint La Veta!

LA VETA- This Saturday, June 14, artists are invited to join together to paint La Veta.  The plein air painting event begins at 8:30 am. Artists register at the Gallery in the Park, 132 W. Ryus, pick up identification tags and maps, as well as discount coupons to apply to meals at local restaurants. There is a small fee of $10 for SPACe members and $15 for nonmembers with the proceeds going to the Building Expansion Fund.

     At 3 pm, the artists will gather in the La Veta Town Park to share the results of the day.  This will be also be an opportunity for the public to view their art and artwork created during the event may be offered for sale.  One artist will be chosen to be the featured artist for the annual Fall Show. The event is sponsored by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council, a nonprofit organization supporting the arts and art education in the Spanish Peaks region.

 

 Felting Classes Offered

LA VETA- Spanish Peaks Alpacas will be teaching a series of felting classes on June 14 and 19, and July 12 from 10 am to 5 pm.  Using hand dyed silk chiffon scarves, alpaca and decorative yarns, you will create a unique, beautiful 13 by 60 inch scarf.  E-mail Judy at spanishpeaksalpacas@gmail.com for further information and photo of scarf.  Or call 719-742-6014.  Cost is $70, which includes all materials.  Classes may be scheduled at your convenience for three or more participants.

Wild (Waters) Casino Night

WALSENBURG- The Huerfano County Chamber of Commerce will host “Casino Night,” a fundraising event to benefit the City’s Walsenburg Wild Waters aquatic park.

    The community is invited from 7 to 11 pm June 14 to the Walsenburg Community Center, 928 Russell Ave., to enjoy a night of blackjack, roulette, craps, Texas-hold ’em and other fun games. The evening will include a silent auction, door prize giveaways and a cash bar.

    A $25 admission will include $250 in “casino money,” hors d’ oeuvres and entry for prizes. Partygoers must be at least 21 years old. Tickets are available at City Hall, 525 S. Albert Ave. and at the door the evening of the event.

    All proceeds will go to match the remaining $100,000 of the Gates Family Foundation grant, which will help to pay for landscaping, a picnic area and a shaded dining area at the park.

Pinon Canyon Essay Contest donations received

KIM- An anonymous donation was made recently specifically for the essay contest award of $500. Funds for the essay contest are coming in from many different sources.

     PCEOC also received another $1,000 from First National Bank in La Junta and next week another $1,000 will be presented to PCEOC by Southeast Colorado Power.  Like many other businesses they both have contributed in the past and stated they would continue to support PCEOC and our efforts.  For more information on the contest and on the Pinon Canyon Expansion Opposition Coalition, go to www.pinoncanyon.com.

 

Supervisors to meet

The Board of Supervisors of the Upper Huerfano Conservation District will meet at 5:30 pm on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at  711 Walsen Avenue, Suite A,  Walsenburg. The meeting is open to the public.

Vital Community Forum

WALSENBURG- A little over a month ago, the Upper Huerfano Conservation District received approval from landowners to increase its mill levy to a half mill.  Now the Conservation District is seeking landowner input on planning projects to put that mill levy increase to work.

    This community forum will take place on Tuesday, June 24 at 6:00 pm at the Walsenburg Community Center.  Dinner will be available for those who make a reservation with the Conservation District office.

    The meeting will include information on the Conservation District, the Huerfano River watershed, landowners’ local resource concerns, activities to address those resource concerns, and planning for 2009 and beyond.

    This is your opportunity to inform your locally elected officials about your natural resource concerns. RSVP before June 19 by calling Mollie at the Conservation District’s Walsenburg office, (719) 738-1171.

Sign up now for La Veta Summer Volleyball Camp

LA VETA- La Veta Volleyball Summer Camp, offered for students entering grades three through eight, will be held from Monday, July 7 through Thursday, July 10 from 9 am to 12:30 pm. daily.  The camp will offer individual instruction for every camper participating.  Emphasis is on the development of fundamental skills while having fun doing so.  The goal is to have each camper leave camp with a better command of and appreciation for the game of volleyball, as well as an understanding of what it takes to be a winner both on and off the court.  Cost for the camp is $45 per camper and includes a camp t-shirt, daily snacks, and instruction provided by La Veta Volleyball Coach Bree Lessar, Assistant Coach Brandi Menegatti, and several La Veta Varsity Volleyball players.  Registration forms can be picked up at Two Peak Fitness or the Wildflour, or they can be obtained by contacting Coach Lessar at 742-5184.  Registration closes on Monday, June 30.

 

Stars over La Veta Quilt Show

LA VETA- The Scrappy Ladies Quilt Guild is a group of quilters based in Walsenburg, dedicated to the art of quilting.  We have members from Walsenburg, La Veta, Rye, Colorado City and Raton, NM.  The Walsenburg and La Veta members are: Barb Beckner, Janet Behringer, Debra Donnelly, Michelle Gilhirst, Jeanette Hansen, Sally Hix, Tommi Lard, Dorothy Main, Joanne Main, Maribel Mendoza, Gretchen Orr, Jo Ozbun, and Sue Palmer. 

    The group is inviting the residents of Rye and Colorado City to come to the annual Quilt Show.  This year it will be in conjunction with La Veta’s Art in the Park July 4, 5, and 6.

    The Scrappy Ladies will have a booth in the park demonstrating hand quilting and showing off some of our charity quilts.

    The Stars over La Veta Quilt Show will be in the La Veta Community Center on Ryus Avenue, right next to the park.  It will be from 10 am to 3 pm, July 4, 5, and 6.  There will be more than 50 quilts displayed.  There will also be a display of  more than 100 quilt blocks.

    Plus there will be a display of “Alzheimer Priority Quilts” which will be auctioned off on-line, with the profits going to Alzheimer research.

    There will be a boutique with sewing, quilting, and craft items.  Many of the quilts in the show will be for sale also.  Admission is free. A free “fat-quarter of fabric” will be given to every one who views the quilt show.

    The group will be raffling off a red, white and blue queen size quilt at 3 pm on July 6th.  Raffle tickets may be purchased at the booth in the park or at the quilt show.
