Cancer Survivors to be honored at Relay for Life
WALSENBURG — We are calling on all survivors of cancer to register for this year’s Relay for Life Event. If you are a cancer survivor and want to join us in celebration, we want you! Relay for life is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
The event is July 16, 4 pm to midnight, at John Mall Football field. A survivor benefit party will be held at 2 pm before the Relay. New focus at New Hope
WALSENBURG — Nearly five years after New Hope Community Church was instituted, a new pastor is on board. In May, Dr. Joel Shults was called by the congregation to serve the church on a part-time basis. Shults was a member of New Hope’s legacy church, Calvary Baptist, when his family lived in Walsenburg in the 90’s. He and his wife have returned to their home here after Shults retired from Adams State University last year. Dr. Shults has served as a law enforcement chaplain since 2001, and has served in pastoral roles in addition to his full time employment for many years. He is a Colorado registered psychotherapist and Pastoral Counselor.
Because of the transition to new staff the church had to suspend its food pantry ministry for June, but will revisit the program with the hopes of providing food in July. The loss of key volunteers and substantial decrease in outside funding put the program in question. “We know its importance to many families and we will do the best we can to work something out”, said Shults.
New Hope has been known for hosting community activities, but that emphasis may shift soon. Shults will be inviting the community into the church in order to offer helpful seminars. Starting in July, a series of Sunday evening, interactive presentations on subjects such as suicide, anxiety, PTSD, parenting, and personal finance will be offered.
Sunday mornings will look different as well. Starting this Sunday, the music portion of the morning will start at 10 am with communion offered as part of the worship service. At 10:45 Bible study begins in the fellowship area downstairs with a breakfast snack. Visitors can choose to attend one or both of the Sunday morning activities. “I want us to share a learning experience, rather than everyone looking straight ahead at me lecturing”, said the new pastor. “We’ll get to know each other better as we dive into the book of Genesis. It will be a great study and everyone is welcome.”
Rye Telephone Company tapped as ‘gig certified’ provider
COLORADO CITY — The Rye Telephone Company announced today that it has received the National Telephone Cooperative Association’s “Gig Certified” award. The certification recognizes rural providers for delivering gigabit broadband speeds and enabling technological innovation in their communities.
As a Certified Gig-Capable Provider, RTC joins a national campaign to build awareness and industry recognition of community-based telecom providers that have built communications networks capable of delivering Internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, which is 100 times faster than those currently available in many U.S. households. To achieve certification, companies must show that gigabit technology is currently commercially available within 95 percent of one or more exchanges within its serving territory. The Rye Telephone Company (RTC) serves a rural area of southern Colorado and began deploying Fiber to the Premise (FTTP) in 1997, at that time the first in Colorado and fourth in the nation to adopt the technology. Over the years, the Company has expanded FTTP to a majority of the service area and is committed to providing advanced communications services to their subscribers and region. Today, RTC’s Gigabit-capable fiber facilities now pass more than 95 percent of the residents and businesses in town and the surrounding areas of the Colorado City Exchange.
Annual July 4th fireworks show at Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center west of Walsenburg
WALSENBURG — Remember to come enjoy American tradition at the annual July 4th fireworks show at Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center. This is a fantastic, professional caliber show, so come one, come all.
SPRHC will have live music, popcorn and giveaways, and will offer hot dogs, chips and a drink for $5.
Parking is available at Lathrop State Park for $7 entry. PLEASE REMEMBER – do not park on the highway, no alcoholic beverages allowed and no smoking on the premises. Happy 4th of July!
Fireworks are back in Trinidad for July 4th! City boards prepare for holiday weekend activities
TRINIDAD — After many years of dark skies in Trinidad on July 4th, the City, with the Tourism and Main Street Boards are proud to announce the official return of fireworks and numerous events for the Independence Day Weekend Holiday.
The weekend kicks off Friday Night with Movie Night at Cimino Park followed by the Farmer’s Market Saturday morning. At noon, at Cimino Park, the Iron Eagle Brass Band from Ft. Carson will play until 1:30 and food vendors will be on site. Sunday is set for Bocce Ball and some fly fishing fun with Trout Unlimited on the Purgatoire River at Cimino Park.
Monday July 4th rounds out the weekend with events at Central Park including fishing with DOW Officer Bob Holder, car show, bicycle parade, fun run around the park, hay rides, dunk tank, games, pitching and batting contests, the gate opens at 10:00 AM and all the activities will occur at the Ballpark.
The Trinidad Triggers meet the Topeka Train Robbers at 5:05 PM; admission for the game is $6.00, the fireworks display will occur after the game. Due to estimated crowds, and the fireworks fallout boundary in Central Park, organizers recommend that citizens watch the display scheduled for approximately 9:30 PM from the Central Park Ballpark Grandstands, Cimino Park, TSJC, City Hall Park, the Golf Course, or centralized locations to view the display. Fees for Colorado driver licenses changing July 1, 2016
DENVER — Beginning July 1, 2016, the fees for Colorado driver licenses and related services will change. The fee for a driver license for U.S. citizens and those with permanent or temporary residency will increase by $1 to $26.
