Raton welcomed the Rocky Mountains Riders Association (RMRA) along with the Center for
Community Innovation’s (CCI) Raton Supercross Committee to host the 2023 Raton Supercross
Championship at the Colfax County Event Center and Rodeo Grounds on Saturday, Sept. 9.
Dirt, motorcycles, and excitement were in the air the entire weekend beginning with practice on
Friday, and Saturday was spent racing in front of local spectators.
People of all ages and backgrounds flocked to Raton from Colorado, Wyoming, Texas, Kansas,
New Mexico, and Oklahoma with their bikes ready to take on the track for a chance to win. Over
335 riders from the RMRA racing circuit along with their families spent the weekend enjoying the
custom track built by race promoter Mike Zawacki and his team, as well as the many amenities
and tourist attractions in Raton.
The Raton Supercross committee estimates that the race brought in 1,000 people from outside
the community to town.
From tots to pros, over 30 classes raced all day and many took home first through third place
titles at the championship, as well as hole shot prizes and pro purse prizes. Spectators had the
opportunity to enjoy the race along with vendors and volunteers. Sage Coffee, Blu Dragonfly,
and the Raton High School FCCLA served up delicious food and drinks on Saturday.
Vendors like Moto Option sold supercross merchandise, Zia Youth and Raton High School
Cheerleaders sold raffle tickets and had a booth for facepainting. Raton Supercross organized
a huge raffle for big prizes like the Zawasaki Elektrode Bike donated by Hesters Motorsports
and a 400 dollar gift card to Brick City Tattoo parlor.
After another year of successful racing, CCI would like to thank all of its monetary and in-kind
sponsors for their contribution to make this race happen and bring another year of racing back
to Raton.
