12 youths injured in car crash

TOLTEC- A 1997 Chevy pickup truck loaded with 12 youths rolled on  County Road 591 at 11:05 pm on Monday evening.  All 12 were injured.  All are from Huerfano County  They suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious, but not life-threatening.

The Colorado State Patrol said the 16 year old driver of the vehicle faces charges of careless driving without a valid driver’s licence.  The youth stated he lost control of the truck while swerving to avoid a dog in the road.  The truck careened left into an irrigation ditch, and the eight passengers riding in the truck’s bed were ejected.  The three passengers inside the cab- none of them wearing seatbelts- were bounced around.

Six of the youths were transported to Spanish Peaks Hospital, and the other treated and released at the scene.  Their ages range from 12 to 17.

The driver was issued a summons and released.  Drugs or alchohol are not suspected as factors.
