Xavier E. Sandoval

Xavier E. Sandoval 7/1/1930 ~ 10/9/2020

Xavier Sandoval passed away in his home October 9, 2020 and was born July 1, 1930 to parents Ruben Sandoval and Balbina Trujillo in Pictou Colorado, a mining camp near Walsenburg. He lived in Toltec in his early childhood years and graduated from Huerfano County High School in 1949. Xavier joined the US Navy after high school and served on the USS Bache. While still serving, he then married the love of his life, Patricia Martinez.

After his military service, Xavier went to work for the US Department of Defense at the Pueblo Army Depot as a missile technician. He served on the Huerfano County Hospital Board, elected in 1986 as Huerfano County commissioner for a total of 16 years. He played a major role in the construction of the Walsenburg Community Center and the upgrade of many county facilities. He belonged to the St. Mary Catholic Church as an usher, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, and the American GI Forum which provided scholarships to minorities in the county.

Xavier had a great love of life and a deep love of his family. He is survived by his sister Rachel Sammon and brother Manuel (Dixie) Sandoval, his sons; Don Sandoval, Steve Sandoval, Tim Sandoval (Heidi Simpson), and daughter Susan Chavez (Adrian Chavez), grandchildren Jaime (Sandoval) Schlomberg, John Sandoval, Kendall Sandoval, McKenna Sandoval, Xavier Chavez, Antonio Chavez; and great grandchildren Alexander Schlomberg, Violet Schlomberg, Ava Grace Schlomberg, and Sapphire Sandoval. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his parents Ruben and Balbina (Trujillo) Sandoval and eight brothers and sisters.
He was a lifelong advocate for the betterment of his community by helping people and is missed greatly.
