Worth the Walk

WALSENBURG- Open Arms Pregnancy Resource Center will sponsor its first Walk for Life on Saturday, May 10 at 10:00 am in Walsenburg.  Organizers are setting out brochures throughout Walsenburg and La Veta and are encouraging everyone to join in.  Participants who get sponsors to pledge money to the Center will receive a t-shirt.  Two participants with the highest dollar amount in pledges will receive a Wal-Mart gift certificate, one in the 15 years and younger category and the other in the 16 years and older category.  The Walk will be approximately two miles long and will wind through the streets of Walsenburg on a route planned out by City police.

The Walk will begin and end at Walsenburg Community Center, 928 Russell.  There will be food, games, music, theater, a cowboy golf tournament (you’ll have to show up and see), and chicken bingo.  “We’re trying to raise public awareness of the new Pregnancy Resource Center,” said Pam Tinsley, Director.  “Word has already gotten through the High School about the Center, and the interest shown by youth is positive,” she added.  The Center’s Board of Directors is encouraged by the support received so far from the community.

The Center will also open its doors to the public on May 10.  Remodeling is underway right now on the office, which is located at 116 East 6th Street (next to Acorn Realty).  A recent fund raiser using baby bottles raised enough money for the Center to rent the office, which “just happened” to be available on the very date the Board had set as a deadline for having an office rented.

The Pregnancy Resource Center will minister to women and men facing pregnancy-related issues.  Services will include : pregnancy tests, childbirth and parenting classes, maternity and baby items, counseling and education.
