Wind Farm

by Brian Orr

HUERFANO- All the wind tearing through Huerfano County may actually be worth something.  The Huerfano County commissioners gave approval to Spanish Peaks Wind Energy, LLC, to begin building a 200 megawatt wind farm on the Mapes and Potts ranches.

Located east of I-25 and approximately four miles north of Walsenburg, the 7,000 acre farm site will ultimately hold 200 wind turbines, each standing 300 to 350 feet tall.  The blades on the turbines will stretch 165 feet, or the length of a 747 airplane wing.

The actual location of each tower has not been determined by engineers, nor Continued from page 1- have engineers determined the specifics of how and to whom the energy will be shipped.  The project will be completed in phases.  According to Larry Mapes, preliminary testing puts their site at a class 4 or 5, with the very best being a class 7.

The County Commissioners also gave preliminary approval to the River Run at Spanish Peaks, a proposed subdivision just south of Cuchara along Highway 12.

The Commissioners also certified the levies and revenues for for the county for 2008.  The total revenue for all taxing entities in the county will be $7,934,585.  The mill levies have not gone up, but the revenues from the mill levies have gone up.
