Washington school hopes

by Carol Stevens

WALSENBURG- Brainstorming was the key to the Re-1 board workshop, held Tues., June 10.  Bill Downey chaired the discussions. Downey stated that there would be no decisions made at the workshop.

The day care center currently renting a portion of Washington School is one of the main concerns for the board.  The board would like to consolidate all of Re-1 into Washington, with administration taking the entire main floor for their offices and boardroom.  Currently, the district is collecting a total of $800 per month, renting a portion of the school to the day care and nursing program.  It was suggested that the day care move into the current administration office building. Cheryl Dowd, from Alamosa, would need to inspect the building to see if it is suitable for the day care. Toilets and sinks would need to be modified, to accommodate the children, including a toilet and sink for the toddler room.  Diego Bobian didn’t want it to look like Re-1 was kicking out the day care center, which is not the case.  The district has high concerns for the day care center.  The school district is trying to see how to best accommodate the day care and the district’s needs. The discussion was tabled until the next meeting.

Gaye Davis was happy to report all utilities are in place for the sports complex.  The complex needs further funding from USA Partners to complete it.  The board decided to discuss this matter at the next meeting, under executive session.

While there is a need for a Transportation Director/Mechanic, the board suggested using Gary Vigil to suit the needs, with Mike Doyle acting as director. This matter will be discussed at the next meeting.

The position of Maintenance Custodian/Supervisor is necessary, due to multiple facilities; Davis has stepped up to fill the vacancy.  Currently there are three head custodians, without supervisory direction. This again would be discussed at the next meeting.

Other topics discussed were the position of High School Athletic Director, job descriptions and updating them, the 2008-09 revised school calendar, and the fence line at the former Walsenburg Middle School now owned by the Spanish Peaks library district.  All discussion items will be brought up at the next board meeting.
