Walsenburg’s community recreation center is now open for business

by Susan Botelho

WALSENBURG — Did you know there’s a new community resource here in Walsenburg? The Washington Underground Recreation Center is now open in the lower level of the Washington School. Through the tireless efforts of District ONE and LiveWell Huerfano County, this once vacant basement has been transformed into a bright new place to work out.

The weight room offers exercise machines, weights, kettle bells and exercise balls to gain strength and an open gym where you can get active shooting hoops or playing ping pong.

Perhaps you’d like to get more flexible? Try taking one of the yoga classes that Ruth and Nate teach twice a week. See what a difference stretching can make.

The convenient hours and affordable fees make this a perfect opportunity to get healthy this spring. An ADA compliant bathroom and shower are available at the center. The drop in fee for weight room/open gym costs $2 and drop in fee for Yoga Class is $5. Can’t afford the fee? Washington Underground has a “work for work-out” program so there’s no excuse not to get moving! A commercial kitchen, available to rent, is also located at the Rec Center.

The kitchen hosts the Cooking Matters classes and plans to offer more classes in the future. Please contact Cindy Campbell (Washington Underground Project Director) at 719-890-0009 to get involved. Spring is the perfect time to change old habits, come get stronger and healthier at Washington Underground!
