Valerio appointed to Re-1 Board

    After public interviews, the Re-1 board chose Yulanda Valerio as a new Director replacing Lynette Kleinschmidt who resigned last month.  Valerio presented a resume and letters of recommendations from Roger Cain and Ray Garcia.  She looks forward to representing the Gardner area.

    Four members of John Mall’s senior class petitioned the board for the privilege of taking lunch off campus.  The board approved this proposal to the delight of the students.

    Gardner principal Bennett reported that a new Falcon logo, designed by Jan Frye has been adopted.  The kitchen will receive a temporary occupancy certification by Friday and the farmer′s market was a big success.

    Peakview principal Martinez reported on the new full day Kindergarten program.  Most parents are happy with the arrangement and accommodations have been made to help the little ones cope with the long day. The Learning Force program for math is starting and NWEA testing has been completed.  The school carnival, “Oktoberfest” will be Oct. 22.

    John Mall principal Siders noted this is a year of restructuring at the high school.  Curriculum is being assessed and more NWEA testing done.  Community and businesses surveys are being sent out.  Homecoming is next week. 

    Superintendent Doyle stated there are 21 O&E students with one graduation in mid September.

    The meeting was punctuated by resignations and retirement notices.  Butch Romero retired after 13 years of service to the district.  Ray Bustos resigned as basket ball coach.  Erin Ruiz, social studies teacher at John Mall received approval for maternity leave until January.  Finally, Eva Benine, resigned citing family health issues. 

    In other business, the board hired a custodian, approved a grant application to fence the new track for $25,000, and decided to sell old track uniforms for $1 or give them away.
