Upon the Rock annual banquet

by Caitlin Dunn

LA VETA — Upon the Rock Christian youth camp ministry sponsored its eighth annual local banquet on April 23 at the La Veta Community Center.

About 40 people attended to hear about the success of the ministry’s 2015 youth camps and learn about future plans. The elementary camp hosted 48 children plus staff last summer, and junior camp hosted 50 children plus staff.

Mark Brunner introduced the audience to some of Upon the Rock’s staff: Sherri Reed, who has been the summer cook for 16 years; Jessika Hodgson and Corbin Bishop, who are new full-time staff; Tina Robbe, chief organizer; Grace and Faith Brunner, counselors; and his wife and co-founder of the camp, Kim Brunner.

Brunner discussed the importance of community, saying, “It takes community. Community is why we’re here.” He spoke on Upon the Rock’s goal to “show the love of Christ to the kids,” and Kim Brunner expressed that running the camp takes dedication, hard work, and tears, and it is important to have a “heart to serve.” Mark added that respect and love within the camp are vital, because in this challenging world, “all we have is each other.”

A 22-item silent auction, which included some ardently contested desserts, raised $853 for the 2016 camp season. The elementary and junior residential camps will be held at Golden Bell Camp & Conference Center, near Divide. Family camp and High School Wilderness camp will be held at the Upon the Rock camp property, southwest of La Veta on Indian Creek Road, which is being developed.
