Fox Theater special Friday schedule
WALSENBURG — A special one night showing of “Desolation Center “ will be held Friday, October 11, 8:15 pm at the Fox Theatre. The movie depicts the untold story of a series of Reagan-era anarchic punk rock desert happenings that still reverberate throughout our culture.

Waste tire collection for 81055 residents
LA VETA — There will be a free waste tire disposal event in La Veta Saturday, October 12, 8 am to 2 pm at the LV Fire Department, 100 Birch Street. This event is sponsored by the Col- orado Department of Health & Environment and sponsored locally by NGO Huerfano Organic Waste Services (HOW).
Bring your old used passenger and light truck tires. The limit per household is nine tires. Tires with rims will not be accepted. An ID with a La Veta zip, 81055, is required, if we don’t know you! This program is for households only, not for commercial businesses such as tire shops. A similar tire disposal will be held in Walsenburg for residents of the 81089 zip code area next fall. Inner Idea Artists and Fall Show at SPACe
LA VETA — One of the shows now on display at SPACe is a collection of artwork by the La Veta Inner Idea Artists, a group of artists who have studied with international artist Peggy Zehring, founder of The La Veta School of the Arts (LVSA). Peggy’s teaching incorporates techniques that release each artist’s inner “idea” or “need,” in order to create a unique expression of the artist’s inner self. Her concepts grow out of the philosophy of Wassily Kandinsky, the father of abstract art. Artists in the show include Peggy Zehring, Rena Kaplowitz, Lana Thomas, Maggie MacIndoe, Mary Sewell Cooper and Marta Moore.
Also on display at the SPACe Gallery in the Park, the Fall Show includes artwork by Diane Lather Belfour, Ann Gethen, EC Hansen, Sheigla Hartman, Kathy Hill, Patti Paiz Jones, Marjory Joy, Cathy Mullens, Pat Newell, and Lisa Faherty-Vance. There are paintings, ceramics and assemblages with much of the artwork reflecting the Autumn Season in Colorado, including many small paintings.
The SPACe Gift Shop is overflowing with jewelry, ceramics, cards, and prints created by SPACe members. It’s a good place to start thinking about holiday gift giving. Ecosystem recovery after Spring Fire
LA VETA — The Colorado Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society is offering a 1 day workshop on Forest/Soil Health Post Fire. The focus of the workshop is the Spring Fire that occurred last year in Costilla and Huerfano Counties. The workshop will be held Thursday, October 17, 8 am – 4:30 pm at the La Veta Community Center, 131 East Ryus Avenue.
This one-day workshop will focus on the effects that severe wildfire disturbance have on forest and rangeland eco- systems as well as ecosystem recovery, using the 2018 Spring Creek fire as a case study. Morning presentations will cover the history and local impacts of the fire, hydrologic responses of burned areas, and the responses of vegetative and arthropod communities, with emphasis on fire recovery and ecosystem management. Following the included lunch, a panel discussion by ranchers, land managers, and conservationists will de- tail specific impacts and management responses on working lands impacted by the fire. The workshop concludes with field site visits in the La Veta area to view impacts, management responses, and recovery in person.
Speakers include: Doug Brgoch (Mayor of La Veta); Dr. Chuck Rhoades (US Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station); Dr. Stephanie Kampf (Colorado State University), Ben Berlinger (NRCS Rangeland Management Specialist, ret.); and Christine Mott (PhD candidate, Northern Arizona University).

The U.S. Census Bureau, in partnership with the Walsenburg/Trinidad Workforce Centers, will be holding a 2020 Census Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 201 E. 5th Street, Suite 19, in Walsenburg.
These positions provide the perfect opportunity to earn some extra income while helping your community. The results of the 2020 Census will help determine each state’s representation in Congress, as well as how certain funds are spent for schools, hospitals, roads, and more. This is your chance to play a part in history and help ensure that everyone in your community is counted!
Approximately 90 positions are open in Huerfano County. Hours are flexible, and the pay is good (in Huerfano County, it’s $14.10 per hour plus 58 cents a mile). Vendors invited to November Quilt and Craft show
WALSENBURG — We would like to invite vendors to participate in our 2nd annual Quilt and Craft Show November 2, 2019! The show will be held in Delaney Hall, behind St. Mary Catholic Church, 121 E. 7th Street.

The Scrappy Ladies Quilt Club has generously offered the use of their quilt stands, so our quilt display will be much better, and will take up less room. The show will last from 9 am until 3 pm on Saturday, November 2. The hall will open at 7 am that morning for set up. If you feel you need more time than that, please indicate that on your registration form.

TRINIDAD — Our Leaders of the Future program is designed for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to help pre- pare them for the road ahead. The program begins Friday, October 18 at Mt. Carmel Wellness & Community, 911 Robinson Avenue.
Knowledgeable guest speakers will present valuable in- formation to the students at each class. This year Mt Carmel Wellness and Community Center will choose two senior students based on their scholarship application and essay, that will receive a $1000 scholarship each. TRINIDAD — “Dying Well: Planning for Death While Savor- ing Life”, is a series of workshops continuing Sunday, October 20, noon to 2 pm at the Samuels Fellowship Building, 510 Pine Street. The featured speaker this Sunday is Rebecca Shandrick, an attorney who specializes in elder care law and disabled care Sunday’s session will focus upon elder care law, as well as the legal rights we have as we age.

Carnegie celebrates Conflict Resolution Month with book reading
TRINIDAD — Children’s librarian, Phyllis Kilgroe, will read The Rabbit Listened, by Cori Doerrfeld Thursday, October 24, 5:30 to 6:30 pm in the downstairs Childrens Library at the Carnegie.
It’s a beautiful little book about Taylor, who experiences a great disappointment, and how all the animals try to help. Everyone is invited. The Library will give away copies of the book to some lucky children who attend. After the reading, Susanne van der Meer, from Conflict Resolution Month, will lead some fun activities. Enjoy complimentary light refreshments.
Care Kits at Carnegie Public Library
TRINIDAD — Join Mallory Pillard and other volunteers to assemble Care Kits for citizens in need Friday, October 25, 3 pm at the Carnegie Public Library Community Room, 202 N. Animas Street. Care Kits are for those experiencing homelessness.

Carmel Wellness & Community Center have teamed up to offer a program that helps people who have lost ones find ways to cope and continue on. Disc Golf Doubles Tournament takes flight on Saturday in Raton
RATON — Grab your discs and do your stretches! This Saturday, October 12, the Raton Disc Golf Association is ‘throw- ing’ their 3rd Annual Whistle Stop Throwdown Doubles Tournament at the beautiful Roundhouse Park, located at 100 Memorial Lane in Raton. Player registration begins at 9 am, with a player meeting at 9:30. Tee off time begins promptly at 10 am.
Featuring two rounds of 19 holes, there will be plenty of disc golf action to be had. As a now official Olympic sport, disc golf is a great opportunity to get out into nature and grab some fresh air, while taking in the sights and getting in some excel- lent low-impact exercise.
Directions to the course are: I-25 to exit 452. Head west on Cook Avenue for .4 miles and then make a slight left to stay on Cook. Take the first left onto Martinez St. and park in the south lot of the baseball field. The first tee is located behind the gazebo at the far end of the parking lot.
The fee to participate in the Raton Disc Golf Association’s 3rd Annual Whistle Stop Throwdown Doubles tournament is $50 per team, with a $5 optional ace and there will be a huge raffle! Come out and play this Saturday!
Fred Harvey’s Southwest Couriers: “All Aboard !!!”
RATON — Grab your walking shoes, cameras, and a hat as we bump along the old dirt roads to take a detour of the grand southwest in this wonderful performance by Vanann Moore Saturday, October 12, 7 pm at Raton Museum, 108 South 2nd Street.
A new breed of courageous, intelligent, and hard-working women traveled west from the 1880’s as Harvey Girls, and then as Southwestern Detour Couriers from the 1920’s through the great depression. The railroads and the Fred Harvey system encouraged these young unmarried girls to head west to work for him, and become a part of the Southwestern land- scape. The college-educated Detour Couriers, or Tour Guides, were a major part of the travel industry enlightening travelers about the history, and unique beauty of the entire southwest. Along with young men who drove the touring cars, and buses, these women took willing passengers off the railroads and from the Fred Harvey Hotels to the ancient Indian Pueblos, National Parks, and other places of interest. They were the “walking-talking billboards” for the history, beauty and opportunities of the then little known southwest.

Alliance Brass at the Shuler Theater
