LA VEtA — We’re doing things a bit differently this month. We are grateful and thankful for this community. That’s why November’s “Soup” event on Thursday, Nov. 7, 5:30 to 8 pm is called “Thankful Soup” at La Veta Mercantile.
La Veta Mercantile and Bachman Real Estate will provide soup, salad, bread, and dessert. Nine previous Huerfano Soup nonprofit presenters who did not win “the pot” will have a second chance to win the donations from this event! The cost is $10 minimum and includes two votes! MoF Day of the Dead exhibit
WALSENBURG — Downtown Walsenburg’s Museum of Friends announces a new opening exhibit “El Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) that honors Huerfano County and MoF artists, musicians and cultural ambassadors who have passed away in the recent months. Opening on Friday, Nov. 8 from 5 to 7 pm the exhibit will include an homage to: Joan Hanley, La- Clair Skaggs, Katherine Emsden, David Cummings, Lash Baldwin, Clark Diamond, Brent Seawell, Random Factor, George Glumac, Ione Glumac, Thomas Nozkowski, Linda Gregg, John Giorno, Neal Grilley, The Colorado Kid, Constance Del Vecchio-Maltese, Jose Rubio, Marlin Babb Crockett, and many others.

American Prayer Trees: History Salon presentation
LA VEtA — Huerfano County Historical Society will hold a Sunday Salon History Happenings Sunday, November 10, 2 pm at La Veta Library. Popular speaker, John Anderson, will be back to share new information on culturally modified trees. His new book, American Prayer Trees of Colorado, contains photos from Huerfano County modified trees. John will share findings that confirm that Comanche, Cherokee, Jicarilla Apache, in addition to the Ute, had a sustained presence in present-day Colorado and had cultural traditions of modifying trees for various purposes (storytelling, wayfinding, medicine, etc.). This should be an interesting talk with one of our favorite speakers. Please plan to join us. A $5 donation is suggested.
Songwriting with Jackson Emmer
LA VEtA — Award-winning songwriter, Jackson Emmer, leads this workshop Sunday, November 10, 10 am to noon at La Veta Mercantile. The session is designed for musicians who have dabbled in the world of songwriting and are interested in exploring it more deeply. We’ll discuss how to stay motivated and write regularly; how to avoid writer’s block; tips for accompanying yourself on guitar; ear-training and critical listening; and more. Free legal clinic at Spanish Peaks Library
WALSENBURG — A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 4 to 5 pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Spanish Peaks Library, 415 Walsen Avenue. The next clinic will be Tuesday, November 12. By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. Walk-ins are welcome, and every- one will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis. Upcoming 2019 dates: December 10.

A first hand perspective on the Criminal Justice system
LA VEtA — The La Veta Library presents a program on Criminal Justice from the vantage point of a “white collar” victim of an unjust system Thursday, November 14, 2 pm.
What would you do if you were tried and convicted for a crime that you never committed? The La Veta Library will host author and lecturer, Jerry Rising as he shares his story of 57 months in prison and how he made the most of his unjust incarceration by tutoring hundreds of inmates to help get their GEDs. Mr. Rising has written a book entitled “Junk Justice” and will share his insights regarding the need for criminal justice reform. WALSENBURG — Downtown Walsenburg’s Museum of Friends announces the 2nd Annual GALA Benefit to Save the Roof and Dick Building, Friday, November 15, 5:30 to 9:30 pm.
The GALA Benefit features The Western Art Sale from the Marcia and Martin St. Lifer Collection and other works from generous contributors. Willson & McKee, Jaquie Gipson at LV Mercantile
LA VEtA — Three favorite local musicians Wilson and McKee and Jaquie Gipson will perform Saturday, November 16, 7 to 9 pm at La Veta Mercantile, 300 S Main Street.
Willson & McKee are two voices with Celtic harp, accordion, Irish bouzouki, guitars, dulcimers, Bodhran, and bagpipes. The duo began making music and touring together in 1990. In the decades since, they have ap- peared on multiple state Arts Rosters, juried showcases, educational programming and performed in many states on stages ranging from Quonset huts to 1500 seat auditoriums.
Jaquie Gipson, an acoustic guitarist, began playing the guitar at the age of 14. With inspiration from Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, Preston Reed and others, Jaquie has developed a style of her own. She has performed for a wide variety of audiences in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas and California. An experienced instructor, Jaquie has taught guitar at Trinidad State Junior College since 1981 and conducts hands on workshops in music stores and college campuses. Trinidad Business Holiday Spirit Decorating Contest
tRINIDAD — The Corazon de Trinidad Historic Main Street Board and the City of Trini- dad Tourism Board Presents “DECK THE HALLS” Business Spirit Decorating Competition. The application period is November 1 through November 22.
The judging period will be November 23 through December 25, and on-site judging by panel is December 6 through December 8. Eligibility requires the decorations to be up no later than November 22. Lights must stay on daily from dusk to 9 pm, and they must be displayed Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.

Food for Thought: storing water in rocks
tRINIDAD — The next Food for Thought program will be Tuesday, November 12, 12 to 12:45 pm in the Pioneer Room of the Sullivan Center at TSJC. This month’s presentation is “Storing water in rocks; a tool that can help us fight wildfires and can also help us farm the ufarmable.”
Keith Ohlhausen invites you to join him in a discussion on how we can bridge the water storage gap between storage tanks and open reservoirs for nonpotable water at comparable costs. Such public water reserves could be virtually any size or shape, self-filling, very low maintenance and last for generations.
Firefighters, farmers, ranchers, homeowners, anyone needing access to a source of clean non-potable water and even the aquifers can all reap benefits from building water storage units using a time proven technology with a few modern modifications.
Food for Thought is an ongoing education series offered at Trinidad State. It allows residents to network and learn something interesting on their lunch hour. Visitors are encouraged to either bring their lunch or buy something from the college cafeteria down the hall. tRINIDAD — The U.S. Census Bureau, in partnership with the Trinidad Workforce Center, will be holding a 2020 Census Job Fair Tuesday, November 12, 1 – 3 pm at 140 N. Commercial Street.
These positions provide the perfect opportunity to earn some extra income while helping your community. The results of the 2020 Census will help determine each state’s representation in Congress, as well as how certain funds are spent for schools, hospitals, roads, and more. This is your chance to play a part in history and help ensure that everyone in your community is counted!
Hours are flexible, and the pay is good (in Las Animas County, it’s $14 per hour plus 58 cents a mile). These are temporary positions that will begin in early 2020 and continue through July.

tRINIDAD — This course is designed to benefit entry-level carpenters, masonry and concrete workers, plumbers, roofers, drywall installers, and electricians. The course will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, November 19-20, 9 am to 3 pm at the Mullen Building, room 412 at TSJC. Participants must register by Tuesday, November 12.
Attendees will be introduced to OSHA policies, procedures, and standards, as well as construction industry safety and health principles. Upon completion of the course, the attendee will be able to identify the common causes of accidents and fatalities in hazardous areas of construction as well as to identify abatement techniques for hazards found in construction. Japanese Art Forms –Suminagashi
tRINIDAD — The next Japanese Art Form event will be Thursday, November 14, 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Carnegie Public Library. Suminagashi is a process in which Sumi ink is floated on the surface of plain water, then transferred to a sheet of paper. Suminagashi (sue-me-NAH-gah-she) literally means “floating ink” and is an ancient form of Japanese marbling dating back over 800 years. Suminagashi is the ancient art of Japanese marbling. Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other kinds of stone.

Teacher workshop on Latino Heritage
tRINIDAD — Bringing the Rich Latino Heritage of Las Animas/Huerfano Counties into Your Classroom: A two-day workshop for K-12 teachers will be offered Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16, 9 am to 3 pm at the Pioneer Room, Sullivan Center, Trinidad State Junior College.
These workshops shed new light on local Latino history. A collaborative, grassroots initiative is making 150 years of Latino history and culture in Trinidad more visible and accessible, thanks to a partnership between the Latino History Project, University of Colorado Boulder and local community organizations.
Trinidad,Las Animas, and Huerfano County teachers, K- 12, will learn more about this local history through a two-day workshop which will focus on the essential role that Latinos have played in our area from their earliest days to the present.
The Boulder-based Latino History Project and CU Boulder faculty and students have been working with the Carnegie Public Library, Hispanic Chamber of Trinidad/Las Animas County, Southern Colorado Coal Miners Museum, Trinidad History Museum (History Colorado) and Trinidad State Junior College to gather information about Trinidad’s Latino history and heritage, and have shared these primary resources on the project’s website.
During the workshops, teachers will learn how to incorporate these and other resources into existing school curriculum, while meeting state and national educational standards. The project originally started in Boulder County in 2013 and has now expanded to Trinidad, Pueblo, and Alamosa, creating extensive online resources and offering teacher and community workshops focused on how to use them.

Mercury Transit Viewing at Capulin
