Chemigation deadline approaching
BROOMFIELD — The Colorado Department of Agriculture reminds those using a closed irrigation system to apply agri- cultural chemicals, including fertilizer, that they must obtain a chemigation permit. The deadline for renewals is Sunday, March 31. This program strives to protect one of our most important resources—water and chemigation permits are an important tool in that effort.
The chemigation program, part of the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s Conservation Services Division, grants permits and inspects closed irrigation systems (such as center pivot irrigation) to protect aquifers and surface water from possible contamination by agricultural chemicals applied through the closed irrigation systems.
A closed irrigation system includes any device or combination of devices having a hose, pipe, or other conduit, which connects directly to any source of groundwater or surface water, through which water or a mixture of water and chemicals is drawn and applied for agricultural or horticultural purposes.
Those using a closed irrigation system to apply agricultural chemicals, including fertilizer, must obtain a chemigation permit, which costs $45 per system. After March 31, the late fee and permit will cost $90 per system. Those applying for a first-time permit can apply throughout the year. A fine up to $1,000 per occurrence may be levied for those using this process without a chemigation permit.

Applications Sought for Noxious Weed Grants to Mitigate Natural Disasters
BROOMFIELD — The Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) is now accepting applications for 2019 Post-Natural Disaster grants for controlling and preventing noxious weeds resulting from these events. This year, the Department plans to award $50,000 in grant funds to local governing entities, conservation districts, non-profit organizations and associations for projects that focus on controlling new noxious weed populations that result from natural disasters such as fire and flood.
These funds are a subset of the $700,000 appropriated annually by the General Assembly for noxious weed management projects statewide. CDA awards these “Weed Fund” grants annually to over 50 counties, cities, conservation districts and non-profit organizations. Following the 2013 floods, a part of this funding has been directed specifically at noxious weed management following large or severe disturbances.

2019 Huerfano County Free Drum Clinic
LA VETA — This year’s Annual Drum Clinic is set for Saturday, March 30, 6 pm at La Veta Mercantile. The clinic will feature solo performances and lessons from professional drummers and percussionists. All players have had years of professional experiences from touring with bands, teaching at schools, recording in studios, etc.. All players will do aQ&A session at the end of the clinic. Joan Hanley Memorial weekend event schedule
LA VETA — Saturday, March 30, 1 to 2:30 pm the Joan Hanley Art Walk through the town of La Veta will begin at Alys’ Restaurant, 604 S Oak St at 1pm. The five block walking route will explore renowned artist Joan Hanley’s sculptures and paintings in five of La Veta’s public spaces and businesses, and is expected to last 90 minutes.
From 3 to 5 pm a celebration of Joan Hanley’s life and a reception will be held at her former residence, 85 Willis Drive, hosted by her family and open to her friends and acquaintances. Weather permitting, there will be a short walk to her nearby grave marker at the conclusion at 5 pm.
On Sunday March 31, 12 to 5 pm a free show of Joan Hanley’s life of fine art, from her teen years to contemporary will be held at the La Veta Mercantile, 300 South Main Street. The show will include dozens of original works of art (drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs) spanning Joan’s 65-year career, and will be curated and narrated by her son and professional artist, Joe Bartos from noon to 2 pm. Light snacks will be provided, and refreshments are available for purchase.

Youth mental health first aid-no cost course
WALSENBURG — This groundbreaking free course will be offered Friday, April 5, 8 am to 5 pm (one hour break for lunch) at Peakview Elementary School. The free course is hosted by Huerfano and Las Animas Counties Early Childhood Advisory Council. The course teaches participants the risk factors and warn- ing signs of a variety of mental health challenges that are common among adolescents and young adults. YMHFA is implemented around the U.S. and the world. Research has shown that the training enhances behavioral health literacy, reduces stigma, increases knowledge of professional and self-help resources, increases participants’ confidence helping in a crisis situation, and improves behavioral health of participants.
Access to services in remote rural and frontier counties can be logistically challenging- not to mention the challenge of fighting stigma in a small town where everyone knows your business! This MHFA class matches the strengths of rural communities with their unique barriers to accessing care.

Miners Classic Adventure Ride
TRINIDAD — Join the fun Saturday, April 6, 7 am to 5 pm for a great adventure ride in Las Animas County. This ride is part of the Explore Las Animas Dirt Series. Adventure rides are not races. They’re about having fun hanging with like minded people who want to explore and ride hard. Rides are timed, but not for competitive purposes. This ride gets its name from the number of former mines that dot the landscape along the course. Trinidad-Las Animas County was the supply and transportation center for the region’s coal mines. The coal from these mines was highly prized for its quality in creating coking fuels for Colorado’s smelters. Names like Berwind, Chicosa, Majestic, and Tabasco all speak of a bygone era that left its mark on Las Animas County’s his- tory. A portion of the ride includes a stretch of the Pony Xpress 160 route. Local writing contest for K-12 students
TRINIDAD — The TSJC creative writing group is sponsoring a K-12 grade creative writing contest which is open to all themes and genres: fiction, poetry, and hybrid writing. Students will complete in 4 groups, K-2, 3-5, 6-8. and 9-12. There will be 8 first place winners, 2 from each group. Each winner receives a cash prize and pizza party for their classroom. 2nd and 3rd place winners from each group also receive cash prizes. Selected works will be available as a book!

TRINIDAD — The Trinidad State Educational Foundation’s Fun & Friendraiser is scheduled for Saturday, April 6, 6 to 10 pm at Brix Sports Bar & Grill, 231 E Main Street. The event features a silent auction, dinner, guest speaker Todd Romero – Sports Host/Reporter with Altitude Sports, and Hall of Fame induction, honoring Laura DeBella and Mike Dixon. Rag Tag art show at the A.R. Mitchell Museum
TRINIDAD — Rag Tag, Raton Art Group and Trinidad Art Group, art show is currently showing their work at the A.R. Mitchell Museum, 150 E, Main Street in Trinidad. A group of seven artists, some from Raton and some Trinidad, each invited one additional artist to join them in a collaboration of comraderies and experimentation to create this collection of a fourteen person art show which includes photography, 3 dimensional wall art, acrylics, oils, watercolors and other mediums.
Artists showing their work are Terry Bumpus, Sally Elliot, Jenifer Ghormley, Frank LaLumina, Paula Little, Kathy Longinaker, Roberta Lutgens, Cindy Montoya, Charles Murphy, Mary Newton, Yvonne O’Brien, Jennifer Parisi, Martin Pavletich and Lois Peterson.

Historic exhibition at Di Lisio building A clothes line tribute to Raton’s business leaders open now
RATON — “A Clothes Line Tribute to Raton’s Business Leaders” opened Monday, March 18 and will run through April 12, Monday – Friday, 10 am to 2 pm at 144 South Second Street. The “old shoe store” at the Di Lisio building offers a ready avenue to view poster presentations, newspaper articles and advertisements from 1918 continuing through 2018.
