Mental Health Colorado initiative “In This Together”
DENVER — This is undoubtedly one of the most stressful times imaginable for many. This pandemic drives the message home that our physical health and our mental health are not separate. To combat feelings of loneliness, iso- lation, and stress, and to get through this pandemic with healthier minds, Mental Health Colorado started “In This Together” as a way to connect people with people—and just to chat. People can sign up on Mental Health Colorado’s website and they will receive a friendly, supportive call just for the therapeutic sake of old-fashioned conversation.
In This Together is for everyone—from older adults living alone or people who just recovered from a surgery, to young people living in remote parts of the state or new parents trying to put workable routines in place. When people listen to and support each other, they feel and do better managing their way through challenges and have a better feeling for what it means to be strong and united as a community.
The purpose of In This Together is to provide social connectedness by phone, not to provide mental health services. Those who are more seriously concerned about their own mental health should call the Colorado Crisis Services at 1-844-493-8255 or text “TALK” to 38255.

Huerfano RE-1 hunger relief box distribution today
WALSENBURG — In collaboration with The Colorado COVID-19 Emergency Hunger Relief Fund, Huerfano RE-1 will be handing out fresh fruits, vegetables and other food items over the next several weeks for families and residents of our community. Our second event will take place at Peakview and Gardner locations today, Thursday June 11, 11 a.m. to 12 noon. (Thursday, June 25 will be the next distribution.)
This will be a drive up process similar to the school sack lunch pick up. For Walsenburg, we will have signs guiding traffic around the back of John Mall High School, through the alley between John Mall and Peakview. For Gardner, the time is the same 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., and will distribute from the parking lot of the school. Please do not arrive or line up before 10:45 am. There will be a limit of 1 box per household while supplies remain.
We ask for your help by returning any boxes and empty egg cartons we hand out so that we can reuse them for making future food boxes. Please email Tara Burke at tburke@huerfano.k12.co.us if you need additional details.

LA VETA — The La Veta farmers market for the 2020 season will be every Thursday, 3-5 p.m. on the grassy area in front of Francisco Fort Museum on Main St. COVID regulations may be in effect so please check the La Veta farmers market FB page for details as the opening date gets closer!
Two Peaks Fitness reopens
LA VETA — Two Peaks Fitness reopened its fitness facility last week, with normal hours (5 a.m. to 9 p.m., 7 days a week). The health department asks that customers wear a face covering when physically possible. Customers are aked to maintain social distancing and wipe down equipment after use. No one should work out if they have a fever. Rest- rooms and equipment will be sanitized regularly.
Dorcas Circle now open
WALSENBURG — The food pantry at Dorcas reopened on Tuesday, May 26, 10 a.m.. Food distribution days will be Tuesday and Thursday, as usual. Please pull your car in front of the thrift store, we will ask for your infor- mation there, after we get your information we will ask you to pull forward, our staff will load your car for you.
The thrift store is open now and will run normal hours every Tuesday and Thursday through the month. Shoppers will be required to wear a mask for entry, and we will be limiting entry to four customers at a time. God bless, and we look forward to seeing all of you.
Invitation to enter Western Art Exhibit
LA VETA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council in La Veta extends an invitation to artists working in all media, except photography, to enter the upcoming Western Rendezvous Art Exhibition. Artwork may be submitted Thurs- day, June 11, Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13, in person, between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the SPACe Gallery in the Park, 132 W. Ryus.
Face coverings are required and social distancing will be enforced, allowing only 4 people at once in the gallery. Accepted art- work will be judged for cash awards by accomplished Alamosa plein air painter, Coni Grant. Artists may enter 1, 2, or 3 pieces, with at least one piece being accepted for the show. Artwork may reflect native American or ranching culture, western wildlife, livestock, pioneers, western scenery and structures as well as past and current cultures characteristic of the Rocky Mountain West. Volunteers needed for La Veta Information Center
LA VETA — The La Veta Cuchara Chamber of Commerce (LVCCC) and the La Veta Creative District (LVCD) are working with the La Veta Town Trustees to establish an information center at the Train Depot in La Veta. LVCCC and LVCD are preparing to have an MOU (memo of understanding) in place and the building sparkling and ready to host visitors by Monday, June 15. We are looking for volunteers who would like to greet tourists and visitors, supply local information such as maps, lists of restaurants, shopping, campgrounds, B&B’s, recreational areas–as well as light cleaning and watering of the flowers. Volunteers will have access to Wi-Fi, training will be provided and COVID-19 health guidelines will be in place. 4 and 8 hour shifts available. Come share your knowledge and love of the community and lend a much needed helping hand!

Plein Air Painting Workshop with Coni Grant offered by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council, 132 W. Ryus will be held Saturday, June 20, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.. This outdoor workshop is about design, composition, and methods that help painters be more confident. Whether painting en plein air, or in the studio, the principles taught in this workshop apply to whatever medium you are using, and benefit painters at all levels. Introduction to Scratch-Art with Kathy Hill offered by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council, 132 W. Ryus will be held Tues- day, June 23, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.. Learn an exciting new way to create art! Scratch-art is like drawing, but in reverse, engraving white lines on a black background. The workshop is an introduction to using the materials and techniques used for scratch-art. The fee is $35 plus $10 for materials, which includes a 5″ x 7″ Ampersand Scratchboard and tools needed for the class. Ages 14 and up. Limited class size, with social distancing enforced. Painting in the Studio with Kim Mackey will be offered Saturday, June 27, 9 am – 4 pm. at Spanish Peaks Arts Council, 132 W. Ryus. Develop your imagination and technique, focusing on the academic principles of color, design, value and draftsmanship, while working from still life and photos. Individual instruction, a demonstration by Mackey, and a group critique are all included in the workshop. Kim Mackey is considered by critics to be one of the best western artists working today. Huerfano 4-H Fair Covid 19 plans
HUERFANO COUNTY — Due to coronavirus restrictions, there will be no “open class” entries at the Huerfano County 4- H Fair this year. The fair is slated for August 5 – 9.
The fair board is in the process of planning the revised county fair. Further details concerning whether the fair will be open to the public and other details will be published when they are finalized.

Book Nook book delivery
LA VETA — The Book Nook is happy to announce a book delivery service for the locals of La Veta. For five dollars you will receive three books of your choice in genre, author, etc. If you are friends with us on Facebook simply leave a message with your information and preferred method of payment. We now have a PayPal to make secure online payments or you can leave cash or a check made out to Friends of the Library on your front porch. We will send you a confirmation message and date of delivery with estimated time. The books will be wiped down and placed in a new paper bag for your protection. We are still waiting for approval from the county health department, so keep an eye out on our Facebook Page to see when this service will become available. La Veta Public Library curbside service
LA VETA — La Veta Public Library (LVPL) would like to offer curbside service for our patrons during social distancing requirements. Patrons will reserve library materials online via our catalog, or by calling in. Library staff will retrieve the materials, bag them, label them with the patron’s name, and place the bag on a table setup between the library’s Main Street porches, at the edge of the public sidewalk. Patrons will collect their materials from this table. There will be two times each day when reserved materials will be ready for pickup: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Any unclaimed materials will be brought back into the library building at 4 p.m. The service will run Monday through Friday.

Leather holster making at TSJC
TRINIDAD — The Heritage School at Trinidad State presents the 2020 Holster making class beginning Monday, June 15. Students will learn to construct quality gun leather using methods and techniques requiring a minimum number of leather tools. The cost is $350 for 40 hours of instruction. Virtual ribbon cutting for Rocky Mountain Eye Center

COLORADO — Walk With Autism is going virtual this year on Saturday, June 20! You can help raise funds for Autism Society of Colorado wherever you are! Although we cannot be together, we can be united in our support for ASC. CAPULIN — Come join Capulin Astronomy Rangers for our summer series of astronomy nights at Capulin Volcano Na- tional Monument, 46 Volcano Rd. The next astronomy night will be Saturday, June 13, 7 p.m. View planets, our moon, galaxies and more through giant telescopes under some of the darkest skies in the lower 48. All observing will be done in the outdoor classroom area West of the visitor center. Please wear warm clothing and leave the pets at home.

Music from Angel Fire cancels season
NORTHERN NM — Music from Angel Fire has cancelled its August 14-30, 2020 Festival due to COVID-19.
For 36 years Music from Angel Fire has enhanced the quality of life in the region with its three-weekend August Music Festival. The programs touched the hearts of more than 2,500 northern New Mexico youth with in-school ‘Concerts for Youth’ and Music Residency Workshops featuring Young Art- ist ensembles from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. The extraordinary Main Stage concerts reached more than 2,300 patrons in Angel Fire, Taos, Las Vegas and Raton.
