State Fair entries

pUEBLo — The Colorado Department of Agriculture invites everyone to be part of the 2019 Colorado State Fair. The Fair’s General Entry department is a gateway for people of all ages to participate in still exhibit competitions.

From baking and beer to poetry and pet photos, still exhibits at the Fair provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity to show- case creative talent and skill while competing for an iconic state fair blue ribbon.

General Entry categories include: Amateur Art, Floriculture, Arts and Crafts, Needle Arts, Beer and Wine, Pantry, All- age Coloring Contest, Poetry, Dolls, Porcelain Art, FFA Ag Mechanics, Quilts, Farm and Garden Sponsored Competitions, and Fine Arts. The 2019 Colorado State Fair will take place August 23 – September 2. This year’s theme is “Horsin’ Around Since 1869 in Pueblo, Colorado” and celebrates 150 years of horse shows and competitions at the fair. The state fairgrounds provides nearly $34 million in economic activity to Colorado throughout the year; $29 million of that activity is driven by the annual State Fair event. Peach fundraiser for SCCY

WALSENBURG — Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth taking orders now for peach orders to be delivered in August. These peaches are tree ripened, hand-picked Western Slope #1 peaches. This yearly fundraiser is important for the SCCY programs presented throughout the year. 10 pound boxes are $23 ($8 for SCCY, tax deductible) and 18 pound boxes are $36 ($12 for SCCY). Peach fundraiser for La Veta United Methodist Church

LA VEtA — There is still time to order your supply of delicious, #1 Palisade peaches through LA VETA UNITED METH- ODIST CHURCH. We are currently receiving orders and your order will be ready for pickup on Sunday, August 18 between 10:30a-2:30p. Order forms are available throughout town—including blank forms at the door of La Veta United Methodist Church on the corner of Main and Virginia. Vision, Purpose & Presence nature/yoga retreat

LA VEtA — Join us for a day of yoga, body awareness, horses for non-riders, nature and good food in an uplifting environment on Sunday July 21, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. This retreat day will be led by yoga instructor, Ruth Heal and Horse and Human Development trainer, Kim Seng. It is being held on private land 10 miles north of La Veta surrounded by majestic mountains. The day will include a yoga practice suitable for all levels, time spent with gentle horses, an opportunity to clarify and set intentions and goals, and to connect with nature and other like-minded individuals. There will be a delicious homemade lunch with locally sourced ingredients. The cost for the retreat is $75.

Photographers invited to enter show

LA VEtA — Photographers are invited to enter the Annual Photography Show at SPACe in La Veta this week. All work must be framed and ready to hang, with a wire attached to the back. Bring photography either Friday or Saturday, July 19 & 20 between 11 am – 3 pm. Cash prizes totaling over $2000 will be awarded in two categories–Color and Monochromatic. Entry fees are $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers for each entry, with a limit of 3 entries per artist. Francisco Fort Day 5k fun run/10k

LA VEtA — The Francisco Fort Day 5k fun run/10k will take place on Saturday, July 20th at 9:00 a.m. It is organized by Two Peaks Fitness. The race starts at Capps Building on 115 W Francisco. Registration is $20 each. Proceeds will benefit the Spring Fire flood victims and recovery. All participants will receive a t-shirt. A water station and post-run refreshments will be provided. Pick up your packet beginning at 8:30 a.m. and choose to partici- pate in either the 5k Fun Run/Walk or the 10k. Both begin at 9:00 a.m. The 10k is part of the RaBa Cinco series. Horsemanship clinic

LA VEtA — Come join us Saturday, July 20, 9 am to 4 pm at the Huerfano County Fair- grounds, 401 Moore Ave. for a horsemanship clinic for all ages. The schedule is: 9 am- Colt starting and problem solving. 12 pm-free lunch*. 1 pm- Basic horsemanship. Prices are: 13+years$15;6–12years$5;0–5FREE! *Free lunch is provided for spectators and participants while supplies last.

Ben Lard has been training horses for over 15 years. His gentle technique and ability to understand horses is something every- one, equestrian or not, is sure to appreciate! He is passionate about helping others improve their relationship and communication with their equine partners. He is a firm believer that there is no end to what we can learn and improve upon! Territorial Daughters meeting at Uptop

Uptop — Join the Southern Chapter of Territorial Daughters for their July meeting on Saturday, July 20, at noon. We will be meeting at Uptop on Old La Veta Pass. The program will be on the history of Uptop and the efforts to save the historic site during the 2018 Spring Fire. A tour of the historic buildings will follow the program.

La Veta United Methodist Women Granny’s Attic and Bake Sale

LA VEtA — Don’t miss the La Veta United Methodist Women Granny’s Attic and Bake Sale! This takes place on July 20, 2019, with hours from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. There are crafts, bake sale items and, of course, the not to be missed Granny’s Attic, full of things you didn’t know you needed.

Everything is located in the basement of the United Methodist Church in La Veta at 420 S. Main St.

So, while you are attending the Francisco Fort Days, make Granny’s Attic one of your stops. All proceeds from the sale go to local missions and outreach projects of the La Veta Methodist Women.

 

Silver Spurs Ranch Annual Meeting and Picnic

WALSENBURG — The 2019 Silver Spurs Ranch Property Owners Association Annual meeting, will be held on Saturday, July 20. The meeting will be held at the Historic Fox Theatre 715 Main Street. (Handicap access avail- able). You will be receiving your proxy forms in the mail soon along with the RSVP for the picnic afterwards.

Following the meeting there will be a picnic on the Ranch at Bonnie Gallagher’s home. Bonnie is lining up some yard games and other fun things to do.

 

Blues on deck

cUchARA —For 20 years Claude and Michele Appel have hosted many house concerts that many of you have either heard about or attended. This year they are hoping to bring more people up to enjoy the music by having a concert on the old Baker Creek Restaurant deck! Saturday, July 20, 2:00 p.m. there will be an Outdoor House Concert at Cuchara Mountain Park.

Performing will be Chicago great, Ken Saydak and Lucious Spiller, the 2014 #1 in the USA and #2 in the world at the Memphis International Blues Challenge. After watching and performing with Lucious, blues great Bo Diddley exclaimed, “I done played with a bunch of musicians all over the world. But, son, you got it!!”

Rendezvous at SPACe

LA VEtA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe) proudly announces the opening of the 2019 Western Rendezvous Show, a juried and judged show that includes artists working in all media from throughout the US.

“The show includes artwork for everyone and is probably our best Western art shows” says Carole Kramer, curator for the show. The show will be on display until July 20. In addition to the show, selected pieces from the collection of Ed and Valley Lowrance are also available for purchase. Sales from the Lowrance collection will be donated to SPACe. Annual Sundance near Gardner

GARdNER — The Aztlan Native American Community Church is hosting its annual Sundance from July 14-21, 2019. The Dance proper is July 18-21.

Banned by the US Government in 1890, the Sundance Ceremony has survived and continues to flourish today throughout Turtle Island. Please educate yourself about the Sun- dance and sweatlodge before coming out to our ceremonies.

This is not a tourist attraction, and only sincere people will be allowed to attend. There will be a women’s sweatlodge each evening followed by a community lodge.

Food donations will be accepted. The kitchen serves one meal a day free of charge. Cash donations for bathrooms supplies, propane for the kitchen, trash removal, etc are also appreciated.

The address is 7100 CR 620, Gardner, CO 81040. Directions: Take Highway 69 to just past mile marker 24. Take a right on Williams Creek Road. Go straight for 5 miles, no lefts, and turn right at the ‘T’. At the first driveway go left.

Cuchara Mountain Park presents Jeeps and Peeps

cUchARA — Announcing the Cuchara Mountain Park’s first Jeeps and Peeps event July 27 from 9:00 to 4:00. Bring your Jeep and 4-legged “peeps” to the Park to see and be seen. Oh, no jeep? No problem! Come any- way for fun and to check out the jeeps and some jeep related displays. We’ll have jeep parking for easy display, live music, pulled pork sandwiches for sale, hourly prize drawings, informal miniature and disc golf avail- able and other treats too!

Best of all, for jeep lovers: Open Range Overland from San Antonio and Deviant Out- fitters from Colorado Springs are coming to display their jeep related camping products; Cooke Motors from Trinidad is bringing the new Gladiator and a new Rubicon for display; we’ll also have a 1951 Willys to see and appreciate.

Huerfano County Republicans BBQ & Raffle

LA VEtA — The Huerfano County Republicans are putting on an old-fashioned BBQ Saturday, July 27, 5:30—8:30 pm at the La Veta Fairgrounds, 499 Moore Ave. in La Veta. The event will be catered by La Plaza Inn, with live music by Syd Masters & The Swing Riders. Radio personality and former FEMA director Michael Brown is the featured speaker. La Veta School Golf tourney

LA VEtA — The Redskin Open will take place on the Walsenburg Golf Course on Au- gust 3, 2019. The fee to participate is $75 per person. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.

Breakfast and Lunch are included in the fee. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams. Prizes are also awarded for longest drive and putt. Door prizes will be given.

hUERFANo — We are looking for anyone who might be interested in displaying their craft items such as ceramics, wood working, leather crafter, baked goods, knitting items, photography, gardening items such as squash, cucumbers etc., sewing items, canning items such as jellies, jams, pickles, etc., paintings, quilting, flowers, floral arrangements, hand- made jewelry items, crochet items, etc., in the open class show at the 2019 Huerfano County 4-H Fair.

The open class show is open to the public and all 4-H and FFA kids who would like to display their items for the week of the county

fair. Items must be entered into the open class show on Wednesday, August 7, between 8:00 a.m. and 9 a.m. There is a $5.00 entry fee that covers all of the items you may choose to enter in the open class show. The items you enter will be judged and stay on display for the week of fair and must be picked up on Saturday, August 10, by 4:00 p.m.

Annual Quick Draw at THM

tRiNidAd — The annual “Quick Draw” benefit for Mitchell Museum, Trinidad His- tory Museum will be held Saturday, July 20, 10:30am. Artists will start painting at 10:30 am and will finish at 11:30 am. Live auction will follow at 12 pm. This is a wonderful event and open to all ages. It’s a chance to watch a work of art being created right in front of your eyes. Relay for Life bowling tournament

tRiNidAd — ROAR for Relay for Life is having a 9 pin, no tap bowling tournament at Trinidad Lanes, 823 Van Buren St. in Trinidad on July 20 from 1:00p.m.-5:00 p.m. It is $15 a person for three games, shoes are free.

9th annual Mount Carmel festival

Song of Pueblo presents southern Colorado history

tRiNidAd — The Trinidad Historical Society is honored to bring a multimedia production to Trinidad that memorializes some of the most historic events that took place in Southern Colorado.

The program will be held on July 26, 7 p.m., at the Massari Theater, courtesy of Trinidad State Junior College.

The Song of Pueblo is a highly entertaining “oratorio,” or musical performance, that presents these events. Written by renowned California playwright, Daniel Valdez, the show includes narration with video, stills and 100 percent live music.

Tickets for this exciting event are $10.00 per person, discounted from $15 courtesy of the historical society. tRiNidAd — The Trinidad Historical Society and The Friends of Historic Trinidad will hold their summer picnic on Saturday July 27, 2019, at the A.R. Mitchell Museum in downtown Trinidad from 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be served at 11:45.

You do not have to be a member of the Trinidad Historical Society or The Friends of Historic Trinidad to attend the picnic. The cost for the meal is $15.00. Weekend activities for kids at Lathrop State Park

WALSENBURG — On Friday, July 19, take a walk with the park naturalist to find clues to decipher a coded message about Lathrop State Park in an activity called Code Breakers Hike. The activity will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

On Saturday morning, July 20, the park naturalist will conduct a Junior Ranger activity on owls. Kids can learn about owl behaviors, dissect an owl pellet and earn a Junior Ranger badge & certificate. The activity will begin at 9 a.m. at the Visitor Center.
On Saturday evening, Diana Miller from the Nature and Wild- life Discovery Center in will present a program on birds of prey. Miller will bring with her a selection of live raptors. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.

As always, any vehicle in the State Park must display a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Library for up to one week.

WALSENBURG — The Friday Art Lab held every Friday, 1 to 3 pm throughout the summer and fall is for children ages 5-17. This art program focuses on “Service Learning for the Whole Community.” (Adopt a Planter Box with Inter-generational Service Learning).

This intergenerational downtown Walsenburg beautification program is designed for volunteer adults, senior citizens, and local children to work hand in hand to design, build and decorate planter boxes.
