pUEBLo — The Colorado Department of Agriculture invites everyone to be part of the 2019 Colorado State Fair. The Fair’s General Entry department is a gateway for people of all ages to participate in still exhibit competitions.
From baking and beer to poetry and pet photos, still exhibits at the Fair provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity to show- case creative talent and skill while competing for an iconic state fair blue ribbon.
General Entry categories include: Amateur Art, Floriculture, Arts and Crafts, Needle Arts, Beer and Wine, Pantry, All- age Coloring Contest, Poetry, Dolls, Porcelain Art, FFA Ag Mechanics, Quilts, Farm and Garden Sponsored Competitions, and Fine Arts. The 2019 Colorado State Fair will take place August 23 – September 2. This year’s theme is “Horsin’ Around Since 1869 in Pueblo, Colorado” and celebrates 150 years of horse shows and competitions at the fair. Peach fundraiser for SCCY
WALSENBURG — Sangre de Cristo Center for Youth taking orders now for peach orders to be delivered in August. These peaches are tree ripened, hand-picked Western Slope #1 peaches. This yearly fundraiser is important for the SCCY programs presented throughout the year. 10 pound boxes are $23 ($8 for SCCY, tax deductible) and 18 pound boxes are $36 ($12 for SCCY). Vision, Purpose & Presence nature/yoga retreat

Francisco Fort Day 5k fun run/10k
LA VEtA — The Francisco Fort Day 5k fun run/10k will take place on Saturday, July 20th at 9:00 a.m. It is organized by Two Peaks Fitness. The race starts at Capps Building on 115 W Francisco. Registration is $20 each. Proceeds will benefit the Spring Fire flood victims and recovery. All participants will receive a t-shirt. A water station and post-run refreshments will be provided. LA VEtA — The Spanish Peaks Arts Council (SPACe) proudly announces the opening of the 2019 Western Rendezvous Show, a juried and judged show that includes artists working in all media from throughout the US.
“The show includes artwork for everyone and is probably our best Western art shows” says Carole Kramer, curator for the show. The show will be on display until July 20. Annual Sundance near Gardner
GARdNER — The Aztlan Native American Community Church is hosting its annual Sundance from July 14-21, 2019. The Dance proper is July 18-21.
Banned by the US Government in 1890, the Sundance Ceremony has survived and continues to flourish today throughout Turtle Island. Please educate yourself about the Sun- dance and sweatlodge before coming out to our ceremonies.
This is not a tourist attraction, and only sincere people will be allowed to attend. There will be a women’s sweatlodge each evening followed by a community lodge.
Food donations will be accepted. The kitchen serves one meal a day free of charge. Cash donations for bathrooms supplies, propane for the kitchen, trash removal, etc are also appreciated.

La Veta School Golf tourney
LA VEtA — The Redskin Open will take place on the Walsenburg Golf Course on Au- gust 3, 2019. The fee to participate is $75 per person. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.

hUERFANo — We are looking for anyone who might be interested in displaying their craft items such as ceramics, wood working, leather crafter, baked goods, knitting items, photography, gardening items such as squash, cucumbers etc., sewing items, canning items such as jellies, jams, pickles, etc., paintings, quilting, flowers, floral arrangements, hand- made jewelry items, crochet items, etc., in the open class show at the 2019 Huerfano County 4-H Fair.
The open class show is open to the public and all 4-H and FFA kids who would like to display their items for the week of the county
fair. Items must be entered into the open class show on Wednesday, August 7, between 8:00 a.m. and 9 a.m. There is a $5.00 entry fee that covers all of the items you may choose to enter in the open class show. The items you enter will be judged and stay on display for the week of fair and must be picked up on Saturday, August 10, by 4:00 p.m.

Song of Pueblo presents southern Colorado history
tRiNidAd — The Trinidad Historical Society is honored to bring a multimedia production to Trinidad that memorializes some of the most historic events that took place in Southern Colorado.
The program will be held on July 26, 7 p.m., at the Massari Theater, courtesy of Trinidad State Junior College.
The Song of Pueblo is a highly entertaining “oratorio,” or musical performance, that presents these events. Written by renowned California playwright, Daniel Valdez, the show includes narration with video, stills and 100 percent live music.
Tickets for this exciting event are $10.00 per person, discounted from $15 courtesy of the historical society. Weekend activities for kids at Lathrop State Park
WALSENBURG — On Friday, July 19, take a walk with the park naturalist to find clues to decipher a coded message about Lathrop State Park in an activity called Code Breakers Hike. The activity will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.
On Saturday morning, July 20, the park naturalist will conduct a Junior Ranger activity on owls. Kids can learn about owl behaviors, dissect an owl pellet and earn a Junior Ranger badge & certificate. The activity will begin at 9 a.m. at the Visitor Center.
On Saturday evening, Diana Miller from the Nature and Wild- life Discovery Center in will present a program on birds of prey. Miller will bring with her a selection of live raptors. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Piñon Campground Amphitheater.
As always, any vehicle in the State Park must display a park pass. If you would like to attend but don’t have a park pass, remember you may check one out of either Spanish Peaks Library or La Veta Library for up to one week.
